Progress In Computational Physics Of Matter: Methods, Software And Applications

The aim of the book is to describe some of the recent advances, through computer simulation in a broad sense, in the understanding of the complex processes occurring in solids and liquids. The rapid growth of computer power, including the new parallel processors, has stimulated a ferment of new theoretical and computational ideas, which have been developed in particular by the authors in a pluriennal research project supported by Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) for the development of novel software for large scale computations. The book will cover advances in ab initio (Car-Parrinello) molecular dynamics, quantum monte carlo simulations, self-consistent density functional computation ...

Statistical Mechanics Of Magnetic Excitations: From Spin Waves To Stripes And Checkerboards

The aim of this advanced textbook is to provide the reader with a comprehensive explanation of the ground state configurations, the spin wave excitations and the equilibrium properties of spin lattices described by the Ising-Heisenberg Hamiltonians in the presence of short (exchange) and long range (dipole) interactions. The arguments are presented in such detail so as to enable advanced undergraduate and graduate students to cross the threshold of active research in magnetism by using both analytic calculations and Monte Carlo simulations.Recent results about unorthodox spin configurations such as stripes and checkerboards should then excite theoreticians in the field of magnetism and magnetic materials research.

Recent Progress In Many-body Theories - Proceedings Of The 14th International Conference

This volume contains the main contributions to the 14th International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories (RPMBT14) held at the Technical University of Catalonia, Spain, in July 2007. This conference, which was first held in Trieste in 1979, is devoted to new developments in the field of many-body theories, which are being applied and developed in a rapidly growing number of fields. The emphasis is twofold: progress in the technical aspects of microscopic theories and a review of recent applications of many-body techniques. In addition to the more traditional topics, such as nuclear physics and quantum liquids, the present volume also includes the most recent results on atomic physics, cold Bose and Fermi gases, phase transitions and quantum information. Moreover, the volume contains the lectures of the winners of the 2007 Feenberg Medal and 2007 Kuemmel Award, as well as their laudatios.

Recent Progress in Many-body Theories

Quantum many-body theory as a discipline in its own right dates largely from the 1950's. It has developed since then to its current position as one of the cornerstones of modern theoretical physics. The field remains vibrant and active, vigorous and exciting. Its most powerful techniques are truly universal. They are constantly expanding to find new fields of application, while advances continue to be made in the more traditional areas. To commemorate the impending 80th birthdays of its two co-inventors, Firtz Coester and Hermann Kummel, one such technique, namely the coupled cluster method, was especially highlighted at this meeting, the eleventh in the series of International Conferences o...

Introduction to the Physics of Matter

This is the second edition of a well-received book. It provides an up-to-date, concise review of essential topics in the physics of matter, from atoms and molecules to solids, including elements of statistical mechanics. It features over 160 completely revised and enhanced figures illustrating the main physical concepts and the fundamental experimental facts, and discusses selected experiments, mainly in spectroscopy and thermodynamics, within the general framework of the adiabatic separation of the motions of electrons and nuclei. The book focuses on what can be described in terms of independent-particle models, providing the mathematical derivations in sufficient detail for readers to grasp the relevant physics involved. The final section offers a glimpse of more advanced topics, including magnetism and superconductivity, sparking readers’ curiosity to further explore the latest developments in the physics of matter.

Supercritical Fluids

Supercritical Fluids

Supercritical fluids which are neither gas nor liquid, but can be compressed gradually from low to high density, are gaining increasing importance as tunable solvents and reaction media in the chemical process industry. By adjusting the pressure, or more strictly the density, the properties of these fluids are customized and manipulated for the particular process at hand, be it a physical transformation, such as separation or solvation, or a chemical transformation, such as a reaction or reactive extraction. Supercritical fluids, however, differ from both gases and liquids in many respects. In order to properly understand and describe their properties, it is necessary to know the implications of their nearness to criticality, to be aware of the complex types of phase separation (including solid phases) that occur when the components of the fluid mixture are very different from each other, and to develop theories that can cope with the large differences in molecular size and shape of the supercritical solvent and the solutes that are present.

Many-body Theory Of Correlated Fermion Systems - Proceedings Of The Vi Hispalensis International Summer School

The structure of matter is intimately related to the fundamental role played by many-fermion systems. The development in the last few decades of the microscopic many-body theory of correlated fermion systems has been a fertile ground not only for spectacular achievements in basic science in various areas of research, but also for technological applications. Among the numerous phenomena discovered and studied in systems of many fermions, one can cite the superconductivity in metals, the superfluidity in 3He, nuclear matter and nuclei, the quantum Hall effect, the giant resonances in nuclei, the Anderson location and the metal-insulator transition, hole and electron diffusion in doped semicond...
