Lucio V. Mansilla (1831–1913), the widely traveled and cultured scion of a famous family, was a colonel in the Argentine army when he undertook an “excursion” to the Argentine interior in 1870 to visit natives in areas then largely unknown. Mansilla’s uncle, dictator Juan Manuel de Rosas, dominated most of Argentina from 1829 to 1852 and had led successful military expeditions against the frontier Indians in 1852. This book examines the modes of representation of the East in Argentinean literature since the country’s independence, in works by canonical authors such as Esteban Echeverría, Juan B. Alberdi, Domingo F. Sarmiento, Lucio V. Mansilla, Pastor S. Obligado, Eduardo F. Wilde, Leopoldo Lugones, and Roberto Arlt. The East, which has always fascinated intellectuals and artists from the Americas, inspired the creation of imaginary elements for both aesthetic and political purposes, from the depiction of purportedly despotic rulers to a genuine admiration for Eastern history and millennial cultures. These writers appropriated the East either through their travels or by reading chronicles, integrating along the way images that would end up being universalized by the Argentinean dichotomy between civilization and barbarism, all the while assigning the negative stereotypes of the exotic East to the Pampa region. With time, the exoticism of the Eastern world would shed its geopolitical meaning and was ultimately integrated into the national literature, thus adding new elements into the Argentinean imaginary.

La idea de que el derecho, entendido como normativa heterónoma, ha sido histórica y actualmente, menospreciado en el Río de la Plata es un aserto que tiene una extendida aceptación. Esta obra intenta rastrea esta despectiva forma de pensar el derecho, como producto “ajeno” que se enfrenta con el “derecho” vivido, propio, no atenido a una ética general ni de “bien común” sino a intereses particularizados. A partir de una selección de documentos escritos desde sus orígenes hasta comienzos del siglo XX: diarios de viajes, notas periodísticas, prosa y poesía, que incluye la literatura gauchesca el autor se propone investigar las distintas modalidades y razonamientos para esta anomia. Las referencias literarias reflejan esta realidad que ha cruzado nuestra historia desde los más lejanos tiempos y muestran la crisis del derecho desde las más variadas posiciones ideológicas de los autores, aun de aquellos que dicen respetarlo, sean “civilizadores” o “bárbaros”.
