The editorial cartoons of Jay N. "Ding" Darling illustrated what he believed were the important topics of society and politics whether or not they were considered newsworthy by others. The 150 political cartoons selected for Iconoclast in Ink chronicle the personalities and events of the first half of the twentieth century. Pulitzer Prize-winner Darling was also an ardent proponent of conservation, known for speaking, writing, and drawing cartoons about the issue. Darling later founded the National Wildlife Federation.

This book, first published in 1992, equips library managers in all types of libraries to make the administrative changes necessary to deal with new information technologies. Despite financial difficulties due to inflation and declining budgets, electronic/optical information formats and the hardware and software to support them are a reality for many libraries. Libraries are designing and implementing prototypes of the ‘electronic library’ and are introducing new technologies as a growing adjunct to traditional text formats and services. It analyses administrative adjustments to the new technological information culture. Chapters in this resource that deal with issues not easily grasped by non-computing specialists are distilled to basic components, making them easy for busy managers to comprehend and immediately useful to library administrators.

Drawn to Extremes

  • Categories: Art

In 2006, a cartoon in a Danish newspaper depicted the Prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb in his turban. The cartoon created an international incident, with offended Muslims attacking Danish embassies and threatening the life of the cartoonist. Editorial cartoons have been called the most extreme form of criticism society will allow, but not all cartoons are tolerated. Unrestricted by journalistic standards of objectivity, editorial cartoonists wield ire and irony to reveal the naked truths about presidents, celebrities, business leaders, and other public figures. Indeed, since the founding of the republic, cartoonists have made important contributions to and offered critical commentary on our society. Today, however, many syndicated cartoons are relatively generic and gag-related, reflecting a weakening of the newspaper industry's traditional watchdog function. Chris Lamb offers a richly illustrated and engaging history of a still vibrant medium that "forces us to take a look at ourselves for what we are and not what we want to be." The 150 drawings in Drawn to Extremes have left readers howling-sometimes in laughter, but often in protest.
