While the publication of theses “Selecta” from his writings needs no justification beyond what is in them, it will, I hope, serve also as a way of saying a most cordial “welcome back”. Starting with the Unit Circle
It is with great pleasure that I am writing the preface for my little book, "Starting with the Unit Circle", in the office of Springer Verlag in Heidel berg. This is symbolic of the fact that I have once again joined in the main stream of scientific exchange between East and West. Geometry of Matrices
The present monograph is a state-of-art survey of the geometry of matrices whose study was initiated by L K Hua in the forties. The geometry of rectangular matrices, of alternate matrices, of symmetric matrices, and of hermitian matrices over a division ring or a field are studied in detail. The author's recent results on geometry of symmetric matrices and of hermitian matrices are included. A chapter on linear algebra over a division ring and one on affine and projective geometry over a division ring are also included. The book is clearly written so that graduate students and third or fourth year undergraduate students in mathematics can read it without difficulty.

A History of Chinese Mathematics
This book is made up of two parts, the first devoted to general, historical and cultural background, and the second to the development of each subdiscipline that together comprise Chinese mathematics. The book is uniquely accessible, both as a topical reference work, and also as an overview that can be read and reread at many levels of sophistication by both sinologists and mathematicians alike.
Additive Theory of Prime Numbers
Loo-Keng Hua was a master mathematician, best known for his work using analytic methods in number theory. In particular, Hua is remembered for his contributions to Waring's Problem and his estimates of trigonometric sums. Additive Theory of Prime Numbers is an exposition of the classic methods as well as Hua's own techniques, many of which have now also become classic. An essential starting point is Vinogradov's mean-value theorem for trigonometric sums, which Hua usefully rephrases and improves. Hua states a generalized version of the Waring-Goldbach problem and gives asymptotic formulas for the number of solutions in Waring's Problem when the monomial $x^k$ is replaced by an arbitrary polynomial of degree $k$. The book is an excellent entry point for readers interested in additive number theory. It will also be of value to those interested in the development of the now classic methods of the subject.
