Jacob Campo Weyerman and his Collection of Artists’ Biographies
Weyerman’s collection of artists’ biographies (1729) is exceptional for three reasons. Firstly, he includes a great number of painters not mentioned elsewhere. Secondly, he does not limit his selection to good artists only; he also discusses failed painters and their abortive careers. Thirdly, he writes as an art critic who does not hesitate to pass judgments, sometimes severe, on his chosen subjects. In the process, Weyerman provides much information on the social and economic circumstances of art production. He found that a bohemian lifestyle was pernicious to a painter’s career, and argued that artists should live and think as merchants. In addition to analyzing Weyerman’s art critical terminology and his ideas on art theory, De Vries includes translations of two full chapters along with the original Dutch.

GERARD DE LAIRESSE
This book responds to a growing appreciation of the oeuvre and ideas of the classicist painter Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). It offers an accessible introduction to his life and work, with special attention to the historical and artistic context of the late seventeenth-century Dutch Republic. After the death of Rembrandt, de Lairesse became one of the most popular painters of the Republic. After losing his eyesight in 1690, he wrote two influential works on drawing and painting: The Foundations of Drawing and The Large Painting Book. De Lairesse was also a member of the theater discussion society 'Nil volentibus arduum', and famous for his decors for the Amsterdam City Theater. The variety of pursuits which made up De Lairesse's career are presented in colorful detail.
How to Create Beauty
Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) wrote a booklet on the art of drawing (1701) and a manual on painting (1707). The latter, the "Groot Schilderboek", is the subject of this study by art historian Lyckle de Vries. The nucleus of Weyerman’s (1677-1747) literary oeuvre is the weekly periodical he published under varying titles from 1720 to the end of his life. He was its only contributor and editor. This book consists of key excerpts supplemented by a scholarly apparatus that contextualizes Weyerman's witty and satirical comments on the customs and manners of his cocitizens. His moralizing observations constitute a mirror of Dutch society in the second quarter of the eighteenth century in the decades before new socio-cultural paradigms associated with the Enlightenment and Romanticism took hold.
