A New International History of the Spanish Civil War

'...a lucid and scholarly account of an important and immensely complex subject...Dr. Alpert's command of a broad range of archival material, printed documents and secondary works in six languages is extremely impressive.' - P. Preston, London School of Economics and Political Science It is now twenty years since a study was dedicated to the international aspects of the Spanish Civil War and this new synthesis covering the whole of the era and setting it against major events of the late 1930s is well overdue. Michael Alpert takes full advantage of newly accessible archival sources to disentangle the intricacies of this complex issue.

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Health and Disease

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress in Health and Disease

The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is an organelle with extraordinary signaling and homeostatic functions. It is the organelle responsible for protein folding, maturation, quality control and trafficking of proteins destined for the plasma membrane or for secretion into the extracellular environment. Failure, overloading or malfunctioning of any of the signaling or quality control mechanisms occurring in the ER may provoke a stress condition known as ‘ER stress’. Accumulating evidence indicates that ER stress may dramatically perturb interactions between the cell and its environment, and contribute to the development of human diseases, ranging from metabolic diseases and cancer to neurodegen...

Molecular Genetics and Therapy of Leukemia

Leukemia is a malignant disease which continues to play a cutting edge role in the discovery of new basic knowledge about the malignant process and about the potential for controlling these malignant diseases. Molecular Genetics and Therapy of Leukemia presents contributions by leading investigators and scientific contributors to such topics as chromosome 16, chromosome 5, the BCL-2 gene, 11q23 breakpoint leukemias, the p-53 suppressor gene and oncogene, hematopoietic stem cells, cytokines, detection of minimal residual disease in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, autologous marrow transplantation, the retinoblastoma gene, allogeneic bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Applications of Mass Spectrometry in Life Safety

Mass spectrometry (MS) along with its hyphenated techniques is capable of high throughput, sensitivity, accuracy and selectivity for the analysis of structure and composition of almost any product. Like in electrophoresis, MS separates mo- cules based on the mass-to-charge ratio. In case of gel electrophoresis (SDS- PAGE), a well-known and efficient bioanalytical technique, proteins bear negative charges but have the same charge density, so proteins are separated according to their size. Similarly, in case of MS analysis, proteins carry the same charge, and are separated by their molecular weight. Unlike SDS-PAGE, however, modern ultra high resolution MS discerns very small mass differences ...
