This reference book covers the ecological impact and biotechnological applications of diatoms. Diatoms contribute to 40% of primary productivity in aquatic ecosystems. They have a unique biomonitoring ability and sensitivity toward different pollutants in wastewater, and are thereby a tool for ecotoxicological monitoring. The book discusses the need for newer diatom-based indices for wastewater quality analysis. It describes the nutraceutical value of the myriad compounds like omega 3 fatty acids-DHA, polysaccharides, and phenols in diatoms. It also elaborates on the challenges in sustainable diatom biorefinery. This book is meant for microbiologists, biotechnologists, and marine biologists.

Advanced Manufacturing Processes

This book offers a timely yet comprehensive snapshot of innovative research and developments in the area of manufacturing. It covers a wide range of manufacturing processes, such as cutting, coatings, and grinding, highlighting the advantages provided by the use of new materials and composites, as well as new methods and technologies. It discusses topics in energy generation and pollution prevention. It shows how computational methods and mathematical models have been applied to solve a number of issues in both theoretical and applied research. Based on selected papers presented at the Grabchenko’s International Conference on Advanced Manufacturing Processes (InterPartner-2019), held in Odessa, Ukraine on September 10-13, 2019, this book offers a timely overview and extensive information on trends and technologies in the area of manufacturing, mechanical and materials engineering. It is also intended to facilitate communication and collaboration between different groups working on similar topics, and to offer a bridge between academic and industrial researchers.

The Research Probe

The Research Probe (TRP) is a proceedings publication of institutional conferences and research competitions. It focuses on four broad themes: education and development studies; humanities and social sciences; science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and business, management and accounting. This publication provides a platform for experts and practitioners from various fields in the dissemination of their research works that address industry trends and needs, scientific findings and international concerns. Both the institutional conferences and proceedings publication promote a wider horizon for researchers through open-access paradigm. TRP publishes articles employing any of the various research methods and strategies. It accepts any specific topic within these broad subjects. It also encourages interdisciplinary articles that broadly discuss key topics relevant to the core scope of the journal.

Plants Under Metal and Metalloid Stress

In the industrial era, the most important potential threat to crop production is abiotic stress, including toxic metal/metalloid stress. Growing populations and rapid industrialization lead to the generation and release of huge amounts of toxic metals/metalloids into the environment, altering plant physiological processes and reducing yields. In the last few decades, there has been extensive research to elucidate the mechanisms of tolerance to metal/metalloid toxicity and ways to improve the defense system in plants. Use of exogenous photoprotectants such as osmoprotectants, plant nutrients, phytohormones, signaling molecules, antioxidants, amino acids and organic acids are widely being used to improve plants’ tolerance to metal/metalloid stress. Recently, phytoremediation approaches have been effectively employed to remediate metal/metalloid pollution. This book presents the latest insights into plant responses and tolerance in plants grown under metal/metalloids stress to provide a better understanding of the topic and the future outlook.

Transport and Mobility Futures in Urban Africa

This book provides a collection of insightful conceptual and empirical works that situate transport and mobility challenges in the unique context of individual countries and cities while highlighting commonalities across the African continent. Written from an interdisciplinary perspective, the book covers important themes in transport and mobility including the links between urbanization, urban structure, and accessibility; transport equity and poverty, non-motorized transport, public transport, and the challenges and opportunities of new and emerging transport technologies, and ICT-mediated mobility solutions. Each chapter engages with the normative imperatives that are critical to improving the transport and mobility situations of African urban areas now and in the future.
