The public health risks posed by automotive particulate emissions are well known. Such particles are sufficiently small to reach the deepest regions of the lungs; and moreover act as carriers for many potentially toxic substances. Historically, diesel engines have been singled out in this regard, but recent research shows the need to consider particulate emissions from gasoline engines as well. Already implicated in more than one respiratory disease, the strongest evidence in recent times points to particle-mediated cardiovascular disorders (strokes and heart attacks). Accordingly, legislation limiting particulate emissions is becoming increasingly stringent, placing great pressure on the au...
Provides an explicit account of vital aspects of various nanocosmetics drug delivery approaches, thereby providing a next-generation cosmetic product Brings together novel applications of nanocosmetics approaches in a biological milieu Explores preparation, applications, toxicity, and regulatory prospects Includes a dedicated chapter on Niosomal drug-delivery system in cosmetics Discusses the perspectives of the technologies explored so far based upon the findings outlined in highly organized tables, illustrative figures, and flow charts
Environmental Toxicology is the third volume of a three-volume set on molecular, clinical and environmental toxicology that offers a comprehensive and in-depth response to the increasing importance and abundance of chemicals of daily life. By providing intriguing insights far down to the molecular level, this three-volume work covers the entire range of modern toxicology with special emphasis on recent developments and achievements. It is written for students and professionals in medicine, science, public health or engineering who are demanding reliable information on toxic or potentially harmful agents and their adverse effects on the human body.
Biomaterials have had a major impact on the practice of contemporary medicine and patient care. Growing into a major interdisciplinary effort involving chemists, biologists, engineers, and physicians, biomaterials development has enabled the creation of high-quality devices, implants, and drug carriers with greater biocompatibility and biofunctiona
The use of nanomaterials for remediation efforts has been overlooked even though they present interesting characteristics as remediators. This new book provides a valuable overview of low-cost and eco-friendly green synthesized nanomaterials as advantageous technology that promotes efficient nanoremediation of environmental pollution for the restoration of polluted areas. It discusses the potential of nanomaterials, specifically green synthesized nanomaterials, as a practical and efficient solution toward sustainability. The book details the advantages of green nanomaterials when compared to conventional physicochemical methods, such as avoiding the use of harmful reagents and reducing toxic waste production. The book addresses themes such as contaminants associated with environmental pollution and the threats to humans; nanoremediation strategies that use microbes, plants, or amendments; and nanoparticles as tools for nanoremediation and their advantageous characteristics.
Exposure to particles in industry and mining and from accidental anthropogenic sources constitutes an ongoing threat. Most recently nanoparticles arising from advances in technology are exposing a wider population to pathogenic stimuli. The effects of inhaled particles are no longer confined to the lung as nanoparticles have the potential to transl
Satellite imagery and data are widely used in public health surveillance to provide early warning of disease outbreaks and for averting pandemics. Convergence of these technologies began in the 1970s and has gained wide acceptance in the 21st Century. Environmental Tracking for Public Health Surveillance focuses on the expanding use of satellite sensor imagery and long-term spectral measurements for assessing and modelling Earth’s environments in context of public health surveillance. It addresses vector-borne, air-borne, water-borne, and zoonotic diseases, and explores analytical methods for forecasting environmental conditions and their potential for consequent disease outbreaks. Infecti...
Volume 39 of "Progress in Drug Research" contains eight reviews and the various indexes which facilitate its use and establish the con nection with the previous volumes. The articles in this volume deal with polyamines as tumor markers; the histamine (H3)-receptor and its role as a general regulatory system; with cytokines as immunosti mulants and immunosuppressants as well as potential anticancer agents; with fibrinolysis and clinical use of thrombolytic agents; and with catechol O-methyltransferase and its inhibitors, which are of potential interest in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. An exten sive review on antihistamines (HI) provides an excellent survey of this area in drug research. In the 32 years that "Progress in Drug Research" has existed, the Editor has enjoyed the valuable help and advice of many colleagues. Readers, the authors of the reviews, and, last but not least, the review ers have all contributed greatly to the success of the series. Although the comments received so far have generally been favorable, it is nevertheless necessary to analyze and to reassess the current position and the future direction of such a review series.
Enormous funds are currently being invested in nanotechnology, yet very little is known about how its products and by-products can interfere with both end users and people involved in their manufacture. Similar scenarios are already widely known in the history of science, such as the exploitation of radioactivity or the controversial issue of genet
