Hisba manuals constitute a rich and valuable resource for the economic and social history of Islam and the Middle East. They also present a detailed description of the nature and duties of the state official called the muhtasib. The office of hisba and the muhtasib were based on the Quranic injunction of al-amr bi'l ma 'ruf wa 'l nahy 'an al-munkar. The injunction was generally understood as the religious duty of every Muslim to command right and forbid wrong. This thesis offers a full translation in the English language of the earliest example of the genre, in the Muslim East, entitled Nihdyat al-Rutbaft Talab al-Hisba by al-Shayhk 'Abdul Rahman b. Nasir al-ShayzarT (d.589/1193).--The trans...

Java in a Time of Revolution

With remarkable scope and in scrupulous detail, Professor Anderson analyzes the Indonesian revolution of 1945. Against the background of Javanese culture and the Japanese occupation, he explores the origins of the revolutionary youth groups, the military, and the political parties to challenge conventional interpretations of revolutionary movements in Asia. The author emphasizes that the critical role in the outbreak was played not by the dissatisfied intellectuals or by an oppressed working class but by the youth of Indonesia. Perhaps most important are the insights he offers into the conflict between strategies for seeking national revolution and those for attaining social change. By givin...

Capital Punishment

What are the critical factors that determine whether a country replaces, retains or restores the death penalty? Why do some countries maintain the death penalty in theory but in reality rarely invoke it? By asking these questions, the editors hope to isolate the core issues that influence the formulation of legislation so that they can be incorporated into strategies for advising governments considering changes to their policy on capital punishment. They also seek to redress the imbalance in research, which tends to focus almost exclusively on the experience of the USA, by covering a range of countries such as South Korea, Lithuania, Japan and the British Caribbean Commonwealth. This valuable contribution to the debates around capital punishment contains contributions from leading academics, campaigners and legal practitioners and will be an important resource for students, academics, NGOs, policy makers, lawyers and jurists.
