A Second Generation PACS Concept

The term picture archiving and communications system (PACS) was initiated during the first International conference and workshop on the topic sponsored by The International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) in Newport Beach, California in 1982. The research and development (R&D) progress for PACS has been slow until 1988. The earlier PACS modules were mostly off the shelf components connected together to solve a very specific clinical problem. The three major players in PACS R&D are the European countries, United States of America, and Japan. For various reasons, the European coun tries concentrated in modeling and simulation, U.S.A. pre ferred in-house development or purchased PACS mod...

Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy in Sports Medicine

Throughout the twentieth century, interest in sport has evidenced a major increase worldwide and a new field of sports medicine has emerged. Sport spectators hip has been stimulated in part by the increased ease of international travel and the intro duction of new means of communication. Interest in professional sports and in such events as the World Cup and the Olympic Garnes has never been higher and the general popularity of sports has drawn increasingly greater numbers of young people to sports participation. Interest in sports participation has been strength ened both by the provision of numerous sports facilities to populations throughout the world and the accumulating information base that relates regular participation in programs of sport and exercise to health enhancement. Along with in creases in interest and participation has corne a need for a better understanding of the physiological changes accompanying muscular activity and of the trauma that can result from both competitive sport and recreational exercise.

Atlas of Pathological Computer Tomography

The purpose of this book is to provide the radiologist with information which is "as practical as possible" for the everyday use of computerized tomography (CT) in the field of cervical, thoracic, and musculoskeletal pathology. The approach is simple. For each region the following information is pre sented: (1) a general schematic introduction, summarizing the main indications for CT and its specific usefulness; (2) a series of pictures of normal structures with a precise and practical identification; and (3) a selection of pictures of pathological structures, with a description and a short comment, aimed at covering the largest possible field of CT indications and interests. This approach h...

Renal and Adrenal Tumors

The present volume constitutes an attempt to compile contem porary features of diagnosis and treatment of renal and adrenal tumors. A thorough survey of the field is ensured by the authors' considerable scientific experience. Tumors of the kidneys and the adrenal glands are being diagnosed and treated by physicians of different medical disciplines. For both types of tumor, the pathologic cellular substrate is of crucial importance in diagnosis and therapy. In recent years significant diagnostic advances have been made, ranging from angiography through ultrasonography and computer tomography to immunology. New impulses in oncologic therapy have occurred in surgery, radiation therapy, and tumo...
