Aegyptiaca Romana
This archaeological study investigates the meaning of the Egyptian and egyptianising artefacts that have been preserved from the Roman world in different ways. Its point of departure is a detailed study on the so-called Nilotic scenes or Nilotic landscapes. The book presents a comprehensive and illustrated catalogue of the genre that was popular all around the Mediterranean from the Hellenistic period to the Christian era as well as a contextualisation and interpretation. Drawing on the conclusions thus reached the whole group of Aegyptiaca Romana is subsequently studied. Based on a general overview of this material in the Roman world and, moreover, a case-study of the Aegyptiaca from the city of Rome the different meanings of this cultural phenomenon are mapped. Together with other Egyptian deities popular in the Roman world, the goddess Isis plays an important role in this discussion. Aegyptiaca Romana, among them the Nilotic scenes, are part of the reflection of the Roman attitude towards and thoughts on Egypt, Egyptian culture and the East. The concluding part of the book illustrates and tries to explain this Roman discourse on Egypt.

Rome and Baetica : Urbanization in Southern Spain c.50 BC-AD 150
This book examines the development of urban units and their relationship to the adoption of Roman cultural forms in the province of Baetica (roughly modern Andalusia) in the Early Imperial period. Its starting point is a general examination of the notion of `Romanization' followed by a discussion of whether a positivistic interpretation of this concept can be inferred from the development of various sorts of towns found in the province. The nature, implications, extent, and results of Vespasian's Latinitas in the Iberian peninsula are discussed in depth in this respect. The material remains of the province are also examined to see what light they can cast on the problem of `Romanization'. Finally, the degree to which non-Roman cultural forms persisted in the province is discussed with the implications that this may have for the cultural dynamics of the region. The conclusions attempt to draw together the results of these analyses and suggest that Roman Imperialism is best seen through a model which envisages the creation of new synthetic cultural forms rather than through the traditional model of Romanization and resistance.

Del “imperium a la auctoritas” es un homenaje a Michael Grant, quien en 1946 publicaba su célebre libro sobre la oscura historia romana entre César y Augusto, basado esencialmente en las emisiones monetarias imperiales de Ae. “From Imperium to Auctoritas” es un libro que ha provocado múltiples replanteamientos y un avance importante en el conocimiento de este periodo. Las novedades surgidas en diferentes disciplinas epigráficas, literarias y arqueológicas, las mismas que utilizó M. Grant para arropar sus propuestas numismáticas, han dado lugar a la organización de un coloquio celebrado en Zaragoza en mayo del 2007. Este libro recoge las aportaciones de tal coloquio unido a contribuciones posteriores con el objeto de presentar novedades arqueológicas y replanteamientos históricos valiosos sobre este periodo.
