The international conference Intelligent Information Processing and Web Mining IIS:IIPWM’05, organized in Gda?sk-Sobieszewo on 13–16th June, 2005, was a continuation of a long tradition of conferences on applications of Arti?cial Intelligence (AI) in Information Systems (IS), organized by the Institute of Computer Science of Polish Academy of Sciences in cooperation with other scienti?c and business institutions. The Institute itself is deeply engaged in research both in AI and IS and many scientists view it as a leading institution both in fundamental and - plied research in these areas in Poland. The originators of this conference series, Prof. M. D?browski and Dr. M. Michalewicz had i...
A little known fact of history is how the Fifth Column-a minority German population living inside Poland-aided the German invasion in September, 1939. The simple version of history is that Polish forces were outgunned and outmanned by the Wehrmacht. The truth is more complicated. This well-documented, thoroughly researched report by the Polish Ministry of Information in 1940 details the treacheries of Germans on their Polish neighbors. As German troops crossed the Polish border on September 1, Fifth Columnists were ready, marking targets for German pilots, spreading false information to cause panic, spying on Polish troop movements, firing on Polish soldiers, sabotaging Polish facilities, an...
Simulation of materials at the atomistic level is an important tool in studying microscopic structures and processes. The atomic interactions necessary for the simulations are correctly described by Quantum Mechanics, but the size of systems and the length of processes that can be modelled are still limited. The framework of Gaussian Approximation Potentials that is developed in this thesis allows us to generate interatomic potentials automatically, based on quantum mechanical data. The resulting potentials offer several orders of magnitude faster computations, while maintaining quantum mechanical accuracy. The method has already been successfully applied for semiconductors and metals.

Current problems associated with the mycotoxicoses include the recognition of an animal disease as being a mycotoxicosis and confirmation of diagnosis of the mycotoxicosis by satisfactory laboratory methods. By gathering a vast amount of scientific literature, diagnosticians can provide themselves with suitable informa tion for making such a diagnosis. However, the increased number of reported intoxications caused by fungi, the wide range in diversity of disease conditions and the chemical compounds causing the mycotoxicoses, and the ever-changing and rapid developments in the technology of mycotoxin analysis has made the gathering and assimilation of sufficient information by the diagnostic...
