Inflammation, Chronic Diseases and Cancer
This book is a collection of excellent reviews and perspectives contributed by experts in the multidisciplinary field of basic science, clinical studies and treatment options for a wide range of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases or cancer. The goal has been to demonstrate that persistent or chronic (unresolved or subclinical) inflammation is a common denominator in the genesis, progression and manifestation of many illnesses and/or cancers, particularly during the aging process. Understanding the fundamental basis of shared and interrelated immunological features of unresolved inflammation in initiation and progression of chronic diseases or cancer are expected to hold real promises when the designs of cost-effective strategies are considered for diagnosis, prevention or treatment of a number of age-associated illnesses such as autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases as well as many cancers.
Enzymes Dependent on Pyridoxal Phosphate and Other Carbonyl Compounds as Cofactors
This volume is a summary of the proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Vitamin B6 and Carbonyl Catalysis, held in Osaka, Japan, 15-19 October 1990. The development of molecular biology and x-ray crystallography techniques have contributed greatly to the knowledge and understanding of PLP-dependent enzymes. The structural, mechanistic and functional aspects of the PLP-dependent enzymes have been studied for over 40 years by many active researchers. Recent evidence indicates that the coenzyme is substituted by the pyruvoyl group which is a reactive carbonyl in some amino acid decarboxylases, and the presence of pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), another carbonyl coenzyme, in other enzymes. The contents of this volume attest to the exciting progress in elucidating structure, mechanism of action, and the function of enzymes dependent on coenzymes containing the carbonyl group.
Achieving XXcellence in Science
This report is the proceedings of a July 2002 workshop of the Committee on AXXS 2002: A Workshop for Clinical Societies to Enhance Women's Contributions to Science and their Profession. The workshop gathered representatives of clinical societies and identified ways to enhance the participation of women scientists in the clinical research workforce. This workshop was a follow-up to the AXXS 1999 conference sponsored by the Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which focused on how scientific societies could contribute to the enhancement of women's careers in science.

Opportunities to Address Clinical Research Workforce Diversity Needs for 2010
Based on a 2003 workshop, this study describes current public and private programs and recommends ways to recruit and retain more women and underrepresented minorities into clinical research, especially physician-scientists and nurses. Federal sponsors should improve data collection, evaluate existing training programs, and increase the diversity of study section review panels. Public and private sponsors should create funding mechanisms with flexible career paths, and universities and professional societies should both play enhanced roles in fostering diversity. A significant push is needed to recruit minorities into nursing and provide more clinical research training for nurse-scientists, nursing students, and nursing faculty.

Interested professionals are also encouraged to review the contributions made by experts in a second related book entitled "Inflammation, Chronic Diseases and Cancer"; it deals with immunobiology, clinical reviews, and perspectives of the mechanisms of immune inflammatory responses that are involved in alterations of immune dynamics during the genesis, progression and manifestation of a number of inflammatory diseases and cancers, as well as perspectives for diagnosis, and treatment or prevention of these disabling and potentially preventable diseases, particularly for the growing population of older adults around the globe.
