Objects have many stories to tell. The stories of their makers and their uses. Stories of exchange, acquisition, display and interpretation. This book is a collection of essays highlighting some of the collections, and their object biographies, that were displayed in the Uncovering Pacific Pasts: Histories of Archaeology in Oceania (UPP) exhibition. The exhibition, which opened on 1 March 2020, sought to bring together both notable and relatively unknown Pacific material culture and archival collections from around the globe, displaying them simultaneously in their home institutions and linked online at www.uncoveringpacificpasts.org. Thirty‑eight collecting institutions participated in UPP, including major collecting institutions in the United Kingdom, continental Europe and the Americas, as well as collecting institutions from across the Pacific.

“This edited volume of invited chapters honours the four decades of fundamental research by archaeologist Glenn Summerhayes into the human prehistory of the islands of the western Pacific, especially New Guinea and its offshore islands. This area helped to shape and direct many ancient dispersal events associated with Homo sapiens, initially from Africa more than 50,000 years ago, through the lower latitudes of Asia, into Australia, New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and possibly the Solomon Islands. Around 3000 years ago, coastal regions of northern and eastern New Guinea, and the islands of Melanesia beyond, played a major role in the Oceanic migrations of Austronesian-speaking people...

Migration and Memory: Arts and Cinemas of the Chinese Diaspora

This work is the first of a series of books principally dedicated to the publication of papers from seminars organized, either solely by the MAISON DES SCIENCES DE L'HOMME DU PACIFIQUE, or in partnership with other institutions. Upon the arrival in the nineteenth century, almost all of the first emigrants from Guangdong in French Oceania settled and developed family lines. Their descendants do not have same sort fo connections today that their ancestors did, with a China that was then led by the Qing dynasty or Sun Yat-Seng. Is the present generation still to be considered as part of the traditional network of diasporic relations, in the same way as those living in other regions of the world...

Family Violence and Social Change in the Pacific Islands

The Pacific Islands have some of the highest rates of family violence in the world. Addressing the contemporary mutations of Pacific Island families and the shifting understandings of violence in the context of rapid social change, this book investigates the conflict dynamics generated by these transformations. The contributors draw from detailed case studies in a range of Pacific territories to examine family violence in relation to the social, economic and political situation of native populations as well as individual, collective and institutional responses to the development of violence within and upon the family. They focus on vernacular understandings, conflicting social norms, the eme...

This is the eighth volume in the Comparative Austronesian series. The papers in this volume examine metaphors of path and journey among specific Austronesian societies located on islands from Taiwan to Timor and from Madagascar to Micronesia. These diverse local expressions define common cultural conceptions found throughout the Austronesian-speaking world.

"Following the recent development of Pacific archaeology historiographies, this volume focuses on the history of francophone archaeology in the Pacific, whether French, Belgian, Swiss or relative to francophone archipelagos in Oceania. Following a workshop organised in Marseille, France, in May 2016, 13 contributions offer here the diverse perspectives of archaeologists, historians, cultural anthropologists, museum curators and writers. The authors consider the epistemology, actors, practices and institutions that contributed to open this new field of research and to position it on the French and international scientific scene. Various themes are considered, from intellectual history and epi...

The Global Film Market Transformation in the Post-Pandemic Era

  • Categories: Art

This book reviews the development and performance of the global film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic and examines new trends in film production, distribution and consumption through a global lens. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on the global film industry since the beginning of 2020. There has been significant transformation in terms of film production, distribution and consumption. Hollywood, like many national cinemas across the globe, has suffered the most significant impact at all levels: the interruption of new film productions, shutdowns of movie theatres in many countries and delays in the release of new films, among them. Many movies made for cinemas were fo...
