This book explores the convergence of psychoanalysis and Asian thought. It explores key theoretical issues. What role does paradox play in psychological transformations? How can the oriental emphasis on attaining "no-self" be reconciled with the western emphasis on achieving an integrated self? The book also inquires into pragmatic questions concerning the nature of psychological change and the practice of psychotherapy. The Taoist I Ching is explored as a framework for understanding the therapeutic process. Principles from martial arts philosophy and strategy are applied to clinical work. Combining theoretical analyses, case studies, empirical data, literary references, and anecdotes, this book is intended for researchers as well as clinicians, and beginning students as well as scholars.
Three children become lost in the woods where they encounter a creature from the fabulous land of It who soon leads them on the adventure of a lifetime. The Itofit is a fantasy tale about three curious children who, after getting lost in the woods, meet a creature named It from the land of It. The Itofit is also lost. He cannot remember much from the past, and is trying to find his way back home. It is a perfect day for an adventure, so the children decide to help the Itofit, and together they all embark on a magical journey through woods, and swamps, and the amazing land of It. En route, they encounter strange opinionated and kooky characters, some of whom are quite horrific. Beside the Itofit and the children, are buoyant Baloomerangs who float on air, and curious Snigglesnorfs who sniggle - not to mention a dreadful district inquisitor, and the Durjge Dorque, both riding evil vegetable monsters. These devious people tangle with the children, leading them off into a series of adventures and misadventures.

The Ryukyu islands have been inhabited by humans for over 30,000 years. Their modern population, however, did not come from stone-age ancestors, nor did distinctive forms of Ryukyuan culture, such as sacred groves or stone-walled castles, emerge from within the islands. Instead, different groups of people lived in the Ryukyu islands at various points in history. Starting with the earliest extant human remains and ending with the formation of a centralized state in the early 1500s, Early Ryukyuan History traces the people, culture, technologies, goods, and networks that entered different parts of Ryukyu over time. In the process, it synthesizes decades of research in archaeology and anthropol...
The Dark Side of Dharma explores some of the possible undesirable side effects - also known as 'adverse effects' - of meditation and mindfulness. Researcher Anna Lutkajtis investigates why these effects, which are well-known in spiritual and religious traditions, have been ignored in contemporary secular contexts, such as Western psychology.Lutkajtis' research reveals that while meditation is commonly portrayed as a practice that is overwhelmingly positive, a growing number of research studies and anecdotal reports suggest that meditation can also have negative effects. Some meditators believe that these adverse effects are a normal part of the contemplative path and a welcome sign of progre...
The Augusto I know has many manifestations. Martial Arts master and motorcyclist, Chinese medicine practitioner and indigenous peoples' activist, Zen roshi and jester, musician and writer. I think of a story told about the Buddha. Buddha and Ananda were walking. Buddha asked Ananda, "do you know the essence of my teaching?" Ananda, said, "The essence of your teaching is the Eightfold Path." "No, it is not," Buddha said. Surprised, Ananda tried again and again. Buddha said, "No, it is not." "Please reveal the ultimate truth to me. I will remember and pass it on to everyone who will listen." "I hereby trust the ultimate truth of my teaching to you. It is this: Be a friend. There is no greater attainment in this life or lives to come than to be a friend." During the twenty years I have known Augusto, through good times and bad, he has always been my friend. In this book of translations and commentaries, you will find he is your friend, too.
