Fighting the COVID-19 Pandemic
During the past two years, the world has been fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had many negative effects on people’s quality of life, physical health, and mental health. Nobody is oblivious to the general information related to the virus or the deleterious health effects it has been linked to, yet there is a lot more to it than the general knowledge. In this book, we shed light on the virus itself and its properties, epidemiology, immune response, various clinical scenarios and consequences, and diagnostic and management dilemmas. Finally, we discuss COVID vaccines and the related myths and misinformation that have led to vaccine hesitancy and mistrust.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 3-5 million cases of severe influenza worldwide will result in 250,000-500,000 deaths annually. Collectively, data are shared via the WHO's Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), which includes 143 institutions in 113 WHO member states, to help alert the emergence of antigenic variants or the beginning of a pandemic. In April 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cited the first incidence of human-to-human transmission of pandemic H1N1, also referred to as swine influenza A, which was antigenically distinct from other circulating human H1N1. As the first influenza pandemic of the twenty-first century, pandemic H1N1 was not included in the annual trivalent vaccine regimen, leaving a large majority of the population unprotected from the newly emerging pathogen.
Surgical Infections
Skin is a natural barrier to infection. Surgical breakage of skin can lead to surgical site infections (SSIs). SSIs are relatively common and constitute a problematic issue in surgical procedures. Most common organisms include Gram-positive, such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, as well as Gram-negative, such as Pseudomonas and others, bacteria. The extent and outcome of SSI can vary widely depending on the procedure, organism, extent, and other factors, and can result in discomfort, severe morbidity, or even life-threatening conditions.It is thus mandatory to be aware of and follow WHO and CDC guidelines for the prevention of SSIs and to reduce risk factors for acquisition. This book sheds light on certain aspects related to SSIs and how to avoid them.
