The technical and economic feasibility of the retrofit installation ofwood-fired boiler systems in selected commercial buildings in Fort Smith,N.W.T. including MOT airport facilities, is assessed. The feasibility of asingle, wood-fuelled, low pressure steam boiler plant, locatd in the downtown core, and serving these major commercial buildings through anunderground steam distribution system is assessed. A central wood-firedheating system is proposed to heat a number of school buildings in FortSmith, N.W.T. The capital costs to construct the facility, the expectedoperating costs, and the estimated cost savings are assembled. Theproposed central wood-fired boiler heating system was concluded to be economically and technically viable in this application.
