Bibliography on the Fatigue of Materials, Components and Structures: 1838-1950 is a bibliographic guide to references on the fatigue of materials, components, and structures. The materials listed in this bibliography were published between 1838 and 1950 and include abstracting journals and references that have appeared in papers and books. The references in this bibliography are listed chronologically according to their year of publication and alphabetically in each year according to the name of the first author. Papers without specific authors are listed at the conclusion of the alphabetical section of each year. In order to provide easy access to particular subject matter, the bibliography...

Bonded Repair of Aircraft Structures

Bonded Repair of Aircraft Structures

The conventional approach to through-life-support for aircraft structures can be divided into the following phases: (i) detection of defects, (ii) diagnosis of their nature and significance, (iii) forecasting future behaviour-prognosis, and (iv) pre scription and implementation of remedial measures including repairs. Considerable scientific effort has been devoted to developing the science and technology base for the first three phases. Of particular note is the development of fracture mechanics as a major analytical tool for metals, for predicting residual strength in the presence of cracks ( damage tolerance) and rate of crack propagation under service loading. Intensive effort is currentl...

Bibliography on the Fatigue of Materials, Components and Structures, Volume 3 addresses the problems associated with fatigue loadings as evident in branches of engineering and technology. Such debilitating factor also affects the human skeletal system. The book provides several references that show an increasing focus being given to the problem of fatigue in materials, components, and structures. The journals and lists of references used in the book, which discuss the subject of fatigue, are chosen to give an initial identification of citations. These sources are accompanied by computer-based documentation systems. The bibliographical data for each citation are thoroughly reviewed by checking the original bases of publication. The references in the book are arranged chronologically according to its year of publication. Major use has been made of abbreviations for the titles of journals and publications. The book can serve as a valuable tool for doctors, therapists, students, and researchers in the field of medicine.

Fretting Corrosion

Data from over 200 reports from the English literature on fretting corrosion were summarized for ready reference--for engineers who must consider its effect in designing mechanical and electrical devices and for scientists who may wish to investigate the underlying mechanism. The actual wear, frictional changes, variations in electrical resistances and electrical noise, and fatigue due to fretting are described to acquaint the designer with difficulties to be anticipated from this problem. Factors affecting fretting, its effect on the fatigue strength of materials and methods of preventing it are discussed. The main theories that have been proposed to explain fretting corrosion and test methods that have been used to study it are reviewed. (Author).

A Survey of the Literature on the Size Effect on Material Strength

Nearly 500 years ago, Leonardo da Vinci observed that long wires are weaker than short wires of the same diameter. The statistical theory of extreme values (weakest-link theory) plays a very important role in studies of the size effect; competing theories include the energy theory and the technological theory. Summaries are given of relevant publications identified in the course of a literature survey on the size effect. Since this survey was motivated by concern about the reliability of large composite aircraft structures, which are now coming into use, special attention is given to the size effect on composite materials and structures. An attempt is made to summarize the present state of knowledge and to identify unsolved problems requiring further research.

High Temperature Fatigue

High Temperature Fatigue

About 35 years ago, thermal fatigue was identified as an important phenomenon which limited the lifetime of high temperature plant. In the intervening years many investigations have been carried out, primarily to give guidance on likely endurance (especially in the presence of time dependent deformation) but latterly, with the introduction of sophisticated testing machines, to provide knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of failure. A previous edited book (Fatigue at High Temperature, Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, 1983) summarised the state-of-the-art of high temperature fatigue testing and examined the factors influencing life, such as stress state, environment and microstructural ...
