Born in Seville December 6, 1821, the son of a captain of cavalry, Manuel Fernández y González spent his early years in Grananda, where his father was imprisoned for defending liberal views opposed to Ferdinant VII. He attended the Colegio del Sacromante, and later the Universidad granadina where he studied Philosophy and Letters. While he was at the Universidad he wrote his first Poesias, 1835. With his young friends he joined the literary and artistic clubs of Granada, one being El Pellejo, Asociacion gastronomica y artistico-literaria, another El Licea, composed of poets and artists. His reading of Walter Scott inspired him to write his first historical novel in 1838: El doncel de don Pedro de Castilla. From that time on, he wrote steadily: plays, poetry, novels.
