Portraits in the Presence of Marina Abramovic

Previously unseen documentation of Abramovi?'s The Artist Is Present, on the landmark performance's 10th anniversary In 2010, Marina Abramovi? (born 1946) staged The Artist Is Present; it would quickly become one of her most iconic projects. For three months, Abramovi? sat at a table in the central atrium of the Museum of Modern Art in New York for eight hours a day while museum visitors were invited to sit in a chair opposite her for as long as they felt was necessary. Although Abramovi? simply held their gazes in silence for the entire time that they remained seated, each participant reacted in profoundly different ways. Some wept while others held back laughter; some stayed in their seats...

Celebrated Italian photographer Marco Anelli captures the construction of Magazzino Italian Art, a new Hudson Valley institution dedicated to postwar and contemporary Italian art. The transformation and expansion of a 1960s factory building in Cold Spring, NY to house an extraordinary art collection has been documented by Marco Anelli, Magazzino Italian Art’s first artist in residence. From initial excavations to the installation of artworks in the galleries, Anelli traces Spanish architect Miguel Quismondo’s plan to create a space that bridges the artistic legacy of the Hudson Valley with the demands of ambitious contemporary artworks. Several essays and examples of founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu’s stunning Italian art collection enliven Anelli’s series of landscape photographs and portraits. Exhibition Schedule: Italian Cultural Institute of New York: October 4–November 2, 2017

The artist's studio occupies a unique place in the popular imagination. Its environment is both the site of the artist's creative production, and a deeply private, personal space that nourishes and bears witness to the artist's working process, in a continuous interplay with its location, layout, interior and ambience. This rare access to the studio by a trusted visitor provides a unique opportunity to experience the lives of artists working in New York, through their methods, materials and influences, contained within the intimate space of the studio, and observed with an acutely sensitive eye. Artist Studios in New York - which Marco Anelli has been exploring since 2011 - leads the viewer into the creative process of internationally famous artists such as Alex Katz, Alfredo Jaar, Cecily Brown, Dan Colen, Elisabeth Peyton, Francesco Clemente, Jack Pierson, Joan Jonas, Joyce Pensato, Jonas Mekas, Jordan Wolfson, Julian Schnabel, Julie Mehretu, Kiki Smith, Lawrence Weiner, Mariko Mori, Marina Abramovic, Matthew Barney, Mickalene Thomas, Nate Lowman, Pat Steir, Rob Wynne, Robert Longo, Stanley Whitney, Tony Oursler, Ugo Rondinone, Urs Fisher, Vik Muniz.

Ways of Looking

Art has changed. Today's works of art may have no obvious focal point. Traditional artistic media no longer do what we expect of them. The styles and movements that characterized art production prior to the twenty-first century no longer exist. This book provides a straightforward guide to understanding contemporary art based on the concept of the tabula rasa – a clean slate and a fresh mind. Ossian Ward presents a six-step program that gives readers new ways of looking at some of the most challenging art being produced today. Since artists increasingly work across traditional media and genres, Ward has developed an alternative classification system for contemporary practice such as 'Art as Entertainment', 'Art as Confrontation', 'Art as Joke' -- categories that help to make sense of otherwise obscure-seeming works. There are also 20 'Spotlight' features which guide readers through encounters with key works. Ultimately, the message is that any encounter with a challenging work of contemporary art need not be intimidating or alienating but rather a dramatic, sensually rewarding, and thought-provoking experience.
