German and Bosnian Voices in a Time of Crisis

The 1992-1995 war in Bosnia, the most violent chapter in the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, forced more than 2,000,000 people from their homes. Europe witnessed the greatest refugee crisis since the end of World War II and Germany became the primary refuge for Bosnians fleeing the fighting. "German and Bosnian Voices In A Time Of Crisis" is the story of what happened during those war years and afterwards when nearly 350,000 Bosnians came to Germany. The story is told with precision and eloquence by William Walker, a journalist with intimate knowledge of Germany, his home for more than 30 years, and the Balkan region, where he worked often during the last two decades. "German and Bosnian V...

Borders and Belonging

  • Categories: Law

"Borders and Belonging is a pathbreaking, comprehensive, and compact analysis of responses to human migration. It is for a general audience that wants to view migration issues from many perspectives. Though relying primarily on the specifics in the United States, its audience should be worldwide. By answering questions that are rarely asked together, this book's approach is unique. Borders and Belonging starts with an inquiry into how countries restrict movement, rights, and privileges based on citizenship and immigration status. The book next suggests ways to think about challenges to national borders. Sometimes, people make claims based on their humanity, objecting to national borders that...

Solidarity in EU Law

  • Categories: Law

The European Union has evolved from a purely economic organisation to a multi-faceted entity with political, social and human rights dimensions. This has created an environment in which the concept of solidarity is gaining a more substantial role in shaping the EU legal order. This book provides both a retrospective assessment and an outlook on the future possibilities of solidarity’s practical and theoretical meaning and legal enforcement in the ever-changing Union.

Germany as a Civilian Power?

Drawing upon a multi-disciplinary methodology employing diverse written sources, material practices and vivid life histories, Faith in the family seeks to assess the impact of the Second Vatican Council on the ordinary believer, alongside contemporaneous shifts in British society relating to social mobility, the sixties, sexual morality and secularisation. Chapters examine the changes in the Roman Catholic liturgy and Christology; devotion to Mary, the rosary and the place of women in the family and church, as well as the enduring (but shifting) popularity of Saints Bernadette and Thérèse.Appealing to students of modern British gender and cultural history, as well as a general readership interested in religious life in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century, Faith in the family illustrates that despite unmistakable differences in their cultural accoutrements and interpretations of Catholicism, English Catholics continued to identify with and practise the 'Faith of Our Fathers' before and after Vatican II.

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. This volume, entitled Negotiating Boundaries in Multicultural Societies, is divided into two main sections: “The Politics of Belonging” and “The Politics of Exclusion”. Both sections serve to explore the concepts of “belonging” and “exclusion” from an empirical political perspective. Based on practical case-studies, each chapter sheds light on empirical aspects of the challenges of integration, identity and citizenship within multicultural societies. In addition to the challenges faced by particular social groups regarding their cultural and social integration that very much affects their sense of belonging and their overall perception of their own identity, institutionalized political exclusion is still condoned, if not practiced, by states worldwide. When found in a society of ‘multiple identities’, failed integration often results in divided culturalism and hence nations. This volume explores this predicament while referring to a number of country case-studies.

Frankfurt School Perspectives on Globalization, Democracy, and the Law makes use of the work of first-generation Frankfurt School theorist Franz L. Neumann, in conjunction with his famous successor, Jürgen Habermas, to try to understand the momentous political and legal transformations generated by globalization. This volume demonstrates that the Frankfurt School tradition speaks directly to some pressing political and social concerns, including globalization, the reform of the welfare state, and the environmental crisis. Despite widespread claims to the contrary, the legal substructure of economic globalization tends to conflict with traditional models of the "rule of law." Neumann’s pre...

Law in West German Democracy relates the history of the Federal Republic of Germany as seen through a series of significant trials conducted between 1947 and 2017, explaining how these trials came to take place, the legal issues which they raised, and their importance to the development of democracy in a country slowly emerging from a murderous and criminal régime. It thus illustrates the central issues of the new republic. If, as a Minister for Justice once remarked, crime can be seen as ‘the reverse image of any political system, the shadow cast by the social and economic structures of the day’, it is natural to use court cases to illuminate the eventful history of the Federal Republic’s first seventy years.

Cashiers Valley

Cashiers Valley, enveloped in the Blue Ridge Mountains with craggy stone faces, thundering waterfalls, majestic forests, and wilderness areas of unique flora and fauna, has always drawn visitors. Its moderate climate, slower pace, and friendly people have encouraged visitors to stay and, increasingly, to relocate. The residents have preserved a strong sense of place as they embraced the bonds of kinship and community through the years. This is all connected to a powerful religious base and a strong cultural heritage tradition. Today Cashiers Valley retains the charm of an isolated mountain village that welcomes guests. The photographs in this volume were gathered from many local scrapbooks, long forgotten and yellowing with age. Community residents are eager to share their photographs and memories of days gone by.
