Activists, particularly those based in the global South, have accumulated a wealth of experience in dealing with a range of transnational networks operating in diverse issue areas. New theoretical understandings have reflected this accumulating experience. As the twentieth century came to a close, the practice of global and transnational politics was undergoing a sea change. Understandings of its dynamics were changing along with the practice. Classic paradigms of international relations, which had focused almost exclusively on relations among nation-states, were being expanded to consider the impact of transnational civil society organizations. How activists in Ghana, South Africa, and Brazil provide inspiration and strategies for combating the gender violence epidemic in the United States How can the U.S. learn from the perspectives of anti-gender violence activists in South America and Africa as we seek to end intimate violence in this country? The U.S. has consistently positioned itself as a moral exemplar, seeking to export its philosophy and values to other societies. Yet in this book, Traci C. West argues that the U.S. has much to learn from other countries when it comes to addressing gender-based violence. West traveled to Ghana, South Africa, and Brazil to interview activists involved in the struggle against gender violence...

Vaccination of Special Populations: Protecting the Vulnerable

Vaccines prevent 3 million of deaths every year and are a crucial to combat antimicrobial resistance. An optimal implementation of existing vaccines could help to avert up to 1.5 million deaths as well as substantial disabilities. Indeed, vulnerable populations (VPs), including pregnant women, newborns, preterm infants, elderly and patients affected by chronic diseases are frequently undervaccinated and/or at risk of reduced vaccine efficacy, presenting a major health and economic burden to society. Vaccine development programs mainly focus on healthy populations; therefore, vaccination strategies are often based on data arising from healthy subjects.

Women’s Rights: International Studies on Gender Roles and its influence on contemporary Democracy - Volume 2

  • Categories: Law

The work presented in this volume is inscribed in a theoretical perspective that deals with the established relations between Law and society, and in particular a set of pertinent reflections on the issue of ‘Women’s Rights’. The title of this publication in itself can evoke in us a call to reflect on our own lives. Whilst excluding what we already know about how evidence and certain meanings commonly affect us as readers, we need to also ask ourselves questions in relation to the title about which specific rights, the work will be looking at in depth. Chapters: 1. CHALLENGES ANNOUNCED TO GENDER EQUALITY IN CURRENT BRAZIL: A “DEMOCRATIC STATE” AS A DANGER TO WOMEN’S RIGHTS 2. PAR...
