The Classical Tradition in Portuguese and Brazilian Poetry
This book includes 21 chapters dedicated to the study of contemporary, Portuguese and Brazilian poets influenced by the Greco-Roman tradition. It integrates the international bibliography on reception studies in an Ibero-American context. However, the comparison between poets from the two countries highlights the cultural community that, despite the differences, unites them. Travels, routes, and adventures, taken in a linear or symbolic sense, are the common trace of all contributions. The variety of tastes, the greater or smaller closeness to the ancient models, and the authors’ preferences contribute to an overall view of the classical imprint on contemporary poetry as a specific area of literature.
Portuguese grammar
Spoken by millions of people on four continents, Portuguese remains a lesser studied language. To help improve the linguistic understanding of this pluricentric language, the present volume brings together ten studies about different grammatical phenomena observed in Portuguese varieties – from suffixation to intercalated temporal clauses and non-concatenative verbal inflection, among other topics. Focusing on two main axes – usage and cognition –, these studies draw on the theoretical frameworks of Functional Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics, but build a cohesive whole insofar as they all offer usage-based language approaches. By presenting an overview of recent research on Portuguese and its varieties, the book paves the way for the inclusion of Portuguese in the set of Neo-Latin languages best known to the general public.
Homer in Iberian-American Culture and Literature
This book adds to an international bibliography specialised on the reception of Homer, including studies on Portuguese, Spanish, Brazilian and Argentinian authors (from the 19th to the 21st century) articulated by a common perspective, Homeric motifs, and differentiated by literary genre, that is, theatre, poetry, novel, and short story. Well-known and lesser-known names from the literatures being analysed also contribute to the novelty of the set. The contributors are researchers from each of the countries with a specific and well-informed vision of each context. Organising the volume according to these genres encourages historical and cultural comparisons of countries with a long tradition in common. Each analysis is always framed within its cultural context. The contributions to this volume cover a large diachronic, geographical, and cultural space. Some of the texts go back to antiquity, using the Odyssey as the most significant source for several reflections, both ancient and contemporary, and therefore the safest link between old and contemporary versions. In addition, in the modern and contemporary summaries and tales analysed here, predominance is given to epics (Homer and other famous stories known from the epic cycle) as a source, exemplified by texts belonging to various literary works from across the globe, focused on the influence that major political phenomena can have on universal creativity.

Manual of Romance Phonetics and Phonology
This handbook is structured in two parts: it provides, on the one hand, a comprehensive (synchronic) overview of the phonetics and phonology (including prosody) of a breadth of Romance languages and focuses, on the other hand, on central topics of research in Romance segmental and suprasegmental phonology, including comparative and diachronic perspectives. Phonetics and phonology have always been a core discipline in Romance linguistics: the wide synchronic variety of languages and dialects derived from spoken Latin is extensively explored in numerous corpus and atlas projects, and for quite a few of these varieties there is also more or less ample documentation of at least some of their diachronic stages. This rich empirical database offers excellent testing grounds for different theoretical approaches and allows for substantial insights into phonological structuring as well as into (incipient, ongoing, or concluded) processes of phonological change. The volume can be read both as a state-of-the-art report of research in the field and as a manual of Romance languages with special emphasis on the key topics of phonetics and phonology.
Portraits of Medea in Portugal during the 20th and 21st Centuries
The theme of Medea in Portuguese literature has mainly given rise to the writing of new plays on the subject. The central episode in the Portuguese rewritings in the last two centuries is the one that takes place in Corinth, i.e., the break between Medea and Jason, on the one hand, and Medea’s killing of their children in retaliation, on the other. Besides the complex play of feelings that provides this episode with very real human emotions, gender was a key issue in determining the interest that this story elicited in a society in search of social renovation, after profound political transformations – during the transition between dictatorship and democracy which happened in 1974 – that generated instability and established a requirement to find alternative rules of social intercourse in the path towards a new Portugal.
