A Heated Debate

Ever since climate change has been identified as one of the most significant challenges of humanity, climate change deniers have repeatedly tried to discredit the work of scientists. To show how these processes work, Maria M. Sojka examines three ideals about how science should operate. These ideals concern the understanding of uncertainties, the relationship between models and data, and the role of values in science. Their widespread presence in the public understanding of science makes it easy for political and industrial stakeholders to undermine inconvenient research. To address this issue, Sojka analyses the importance of tacit knowledge in scientific practice and the question of what defines an expert.

Knowledge Graphs

This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to knowledge graphs, which have recently garnered notable attention from both industry and academia. Knowledge graphs are founded on the principle of applying a graph-based abstraction to data, and are now broadly deployed in scenarios that require integrating and extracting value from multiple, diverse sources of data at large scale. The book defines knowledge graphs and provides a high-level overview of how they are used. It presents and contrasts popular graph models that are commonly used to represent data as graphs, and the languages by which they can be queried before describing how the resulting data graph can be enhanced ...

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance: Volume 27

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) applications remain highly significant in modern analytical science and this volume compiles critical coverage of developments in the recent literature. The topics covered in this volume describe contrasting types of EPR application, including rapid scan EPR, using the EPR toolkit to investigate the structural dynamics of membrane proteins and pulse dipolar EPR spectroscopy for investigating biomolecular binding events. An additional chapter reviewing the PARACAT collaboration from the EU has also been included. Providing a snapshot of the area by a handpicked group of researchers at the cutting-edge of the field, this book is a useful addition to any library supporting this research.

Text, Speech and Dialogue

This volume contains the Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Text, Speech and Dialogue, held in Brno, Czech Republic, in September 2004, under the auspices of the Masaryk University. This series of international conferences on text, speech and dialogue has come to c- stitute a major forum for presentation and discussion, not only of the latest developments in academic research in these ?elds, but also of practical and industrial applications. Uniquely, these conferences bring together researchers from a very wide area, both intellectually and geographically, including scientists working in speech technology, dialogue systems, text processing, lexicography, and other related ?e...
