Nel corso dell’XI secolo i presuli fiorentini intrapresero diverse iniziative di riforma della diocesi. Il loro impegno in questo senso fu supportato da quegli esponenti del gruppo parentale hucpoldingio, nato a Firenze alla metà del IX secolo e poi affermatosi anche in altre aree geografiche del Regnum, che all’epoca avevano mantenuto interessi nel centro urbano e nel comitatus. Fra questi si distinse la stirpe signorile degli Adimari, che intorno al Mille instaurarono una duratura collaborazione col vescovado. Adottando modalità di interazione politica e sociale caratteristiche dell’epoca carolingia, adeguate però ai nuovi tempi ed esigenze, essi perpetuarono fin oltre alla metà del secolo quella leadership laica che aveva caratterizzato il rapporto dei loro antenati con la città.

Fra il secolo XI e il Novecento il monastero di San Miniato al Monte di Firenze ha svolto un ruolo di primo piano nella vita religiosa e culturale della città. Nel volume si analizza per la prima volta, approfondendo temi, episodi e personaggi particolarmente significativi, l’evoluzione storica e documentaria di questo istituto, celebre quasi solo dal punto di vista della sua facies architettonica e del suo patrimonio storico-artistico. Il testo prende le mosse dal periodo del patronato vescovile, quando il cenobio e alcuni suoi esponenti emersero nel contesto della riforma ecclesiastica successiva al Mille, e prosegue con lo studio del primo periodo in cui il complesso ospitò i monaci olivetani (XIV-XVI secc.), per giungere alle importanti trasformazioni strutturali e funzionali, ma anche e soprattutto semantiche, che il monumento e l’intera area su cui esso sorge conobbero in piena età moderna e contemporanea.

In the eleventh and twelfth books, Villani depicts a particularly eventful period in the history of Florence, whose grandeur is illustrated in several famous chapters describing the city’s income, expenses, and magnificence. The dramatic account follows Florence’s internal affairs as well as its conflicts with powerful lords like Castruccio Castracani and Mastino della Scala. The chronicler’s perspective, however, ranges beyond his city, as he documents such events as the imperial coronation of Louis of Bavaria, the penitential pilgrimage of Venturino da Bergamo, and the first campaigns of the Hundred Year’s War.
