It is an old custom in the Church that, when any great crime has been committed which specially outrages the Divine Majesty, the faithful should be summoned before an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, and solemn prayers addressed to the Eucharistic Mediator in reparation of the sacrilege. This thought brought about, three hundred years ago, the institution of the 'Forty Hours'' Adoration. The three days which precede Lent are, for the world in general, the occasion of sin: for the children of God they should be consequently days of expiation, and the Holy Eucharist is proposed to them as the Divine method whereby alone their expiation can be made effective ...
