These larger social forces not only create the context for our cinematic horrors, but serve as connective tissue between fantasy and lived reality, as well. While several of the essays focus on “name” horror films such as IT, Get Out, Hellraiser, and Don’t Breathe, the collection also features essays focused on horror films produced in Asia, Europe, and Latin America, and on American classic thrillers such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Key social issues addressed include the war on terror, poverty, the housing crisis, and the Time’s Up movement. Es erweist sich als polyvalente Denkfigur, die unter anderem auf Mangel, Abwesenheit, Wertlosigkeit, Zersetzung und Vergehen verweist. Durch eine genaue Betrachtung der unterschiedlichen Nichts-Konzeptionen wird eine gleitende Semantik sichtbar, die im ganzen Werk dynamisch bleibt. Diese entsteht durch die wiederholte Parallelisierung von gegensätzlichen Begrifflichkeiten wie ,Vernunft und Natur', ,Antike und Moderne', ,Dichtung und Philosophie', ,Materie und Geist', ,Leben und Tod', ,Inneres und Äußeres', etc. Dies ist aber nicht die einzige Funktion, die das Nichts in Leopardis Gedankenbewegungen einnimmt: Das Nichts entpuppt sich vielerorts als Orientierungspunkt.
Toward Diversity and Emancipation
This book focuses on the pivotal role which space and spatiality assume in plot and narrative discourse of contemporary U.S.-American literary narratives. Embarking from a new, spatialized approach to cultural history and particularly narrative theory that might also prove useful for neighboring philologies, Marcel Thoene hypothesizes that the canon of novels selected represents a dialectic of simultaneous affirmation and subversion of the American space myth. This results in an integrative and emancipatory function of space reflecting the current dynamic toward a more transcultural, diverse and conflictive post-national U.S.-American society.
