Seven aspects of Petherick's life and literary output to August 1887 are examined, three of which focus on his achievements and adversities as a man of business. The first aspect is his training during his 17 years in the distant colony of Melbourne, which developed his skills that enabled him to achieve an influential postion in the international book trade in London at the age of 24, and the contributions of his writings to that training. The second is the role of his writings in his rise and fall within the George Robertson firm, and in establishing his name and standing in the international book trade.
