"Restoring Levinas to the intellectually rich and combative atmosphere of interwar Europe, Origins of the Other overturns a number of views that have attained almost stereotypical familiarity. In a careful overview of Levinas's career, Moyn documents the philosopher's early allegiance to the great German thinker Martin Heidegger. Showing that Levinas crafted an idiosyncratic vision of Judaism, rather than returning to any traditional source, Moyn makes the startling suggestion that Protestant theology, as it spread across the continent in new forms, may have been the most plausible source of Levinas's core concept.
The Ambivalence of Identity examines nation-building in Austria and uses the Austrian experience to explore the conceptual foundations of nationhood. Traditionally, Hapsburg, Austria, has provided the background for these works. In the course of this study it should become clear that Republican Austria is as valuable in understanding national identity as its monarchic predecessor. Historical interpretations to Austrian nation-building gives the Austrian experience special relevance for the larger debate about the nature of history. Such aspects in the analysis of the post-war Austrian nation-building are the role of consciousness during the building process, the role of neighboring countries, and the role of World War II.
From 1575 to 1730, the citizens of the Alsatian Imperial city of Colmar were divided between Protestant and Catholic communities, plagued by chronic warfare, and ultimately subjugated by the kingdom of France. Drawing on a rich collection of serial archival sources, Wallace reconstructs the collective biography of 6,700 civic officials, merchants, artisans, and agricultural workers in order to examine the local impact of confessionalization in a religiously mixed town, the effect of warfare on the economic interdependence of town and country, and the tensions between French absolutism and traditional civic political culture. Economic historians, scholars of the Reformation, and students of French and German history will find many valuable insights in this multifaceted analysis.
Cet ouvrage, fruit d'un doctorat soutenu, en 1987, à Paris-I, est une étude quantitative et qualitative de l'émigration alsacienne aux États-Unis de 1815 à 1870. Il dresse une sociologie et une géographie du phénomène. Il s'intéresse à toutes les étapes de l'émigration : départ, traversée, installation. Malgré toutes les difficultés qui caractérisèrent à l'époque, l'émigration aux Etats-Unis, les Alsaciens, tout au long du XIXe siècle, restèrent fidèles à cette destination. Ils avaient de bonnes raisons de quitter l'Alsace, mais, surtout, ils prenaient pied dans un pays où les chances de développement économique ainsi que de progrès social étaient très ouvertes et très réelles. L'épisode de la colonisation du Texas par Henri Castro ne représente que 4% de l'émigration alsacienne aux États-Unis : l'importance de cet intermède mouvementé et haut en couleur se mesure plus à sa dimension symbolique qu'à sa réalité objectivement quantifiable.

Beyond Expulsion is a history of Jewish-Christian interactions in early modern Strasbourg, a city from which the Jews had been expelled and banned from residence in the late fourteenth century. This study shows that the Jews who remained in the Alsatian countryside continued to maintain relationships with the city and its residents in the ensuing period. During most of the sixteenth century, Jews entered Strasbourg on a daily basis, where they participated in the city's markets, litigated in its courts, and shared their knowledge of Hebrew and Judaica with Protestant Reformers. By the end of the sixteenth century, Strasbourg became an increasingly orthodox Lutheran city, and city magistrates and religious leaders sought to curtail contact between Jews and Christians. This book unearths the active Jewish participation in early modern society, traces the impact of the Reformation on local Jews, discusses the meaning of tolerance, and describes the shifting boundaries that divided Jewish and Christian communities.
Recent scholarship has criticized the assumption that European modernity was inherently secular. Yet, we remain poorly informed about religion's fate in the nineteenth-century big city, the very crucible of the modern condition. Drawing on extensive archival research and investigations into Protestant ecclesiastical organization, church-state relations, liturgy, pastoral care, associational life, and interconfessional relations, this study of Strasbourg following Germany's annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1871 shows how urbanization not only challenged the churches, but spurred them to develop new, forward-looking, indeed, urban understandings of religious community and piety. The work provides new insights into what it meant for Imperial Germany to identify itself as "Protestant" and it provocatively identifies the European big city as an agent for sacralization, and not just secularization.
This volume brings together recent scholarship on early modern multiconfessionalism that challenges accepted notions of reformation, confessionalization, and state-building and suggests a new vision of religions, state, and society in early modern Europe.
