While the Spanish Inquisition has laid the greatest claim to both scholarly attention and the popular imagination, the Roman Inquisition, established in 1542 and a key instrument of papal authority, was more powerful, important, and long-lived. Making use of diverse historical sources, Cubas provides a comprehensive view of a reformist yet anti-revolutionary trend within the Peruvian Church that, decades before the emergence of Liberation Theology and under divergent intellectual paradigms, developed an active agenda that addressed the new social problems of the country, including those of urban workers, and of indigenous populations.

La creazione di nuovi santi e di nuove sante nei territori della Spagna, del Portogallo e dell’America iberica all’indomani dei decreti del Concilio di Trento contribuisce alla configurazione di un’arte nuova. Il processo ha inizio a Roma, sotto l’egida della Sacra Congregazione dei Riti e delle chiese locali, che negoziarono la creazione di questo nuovo immaginario. Questo primo volume si focalizza per tale ragione su Roma, sul funzionamento dell’organismo deputato alla valutazione delle nuove figure di cui si chiedeva la canonizzazione. I processi di beatificazione e di canonizzazione hanno un ruolo fondamentale nella configurazione di questo universo agiografico: essi rappresentano l’intervento della Chiesa di Roma ma testimoniano anche il processo di mediazione con le chiese locali, che ebbero parte attiva nella creazione della nuova santità. L’esito dei processi di canonizzazione fu celebrato attraverso cerimonie alle quali parteciparono la Chiesa di Roma e le chiese locali, con un apparato festivo e artistico che oggi possiamo studiare sia attraverso i testi, sia attraverso le stampe.
