Le scénariste Olivier Ka explore avec finesse la jalousie, le manque d'amour et ses conséquences dans les rapports humains. Un récit sensible porté par le trait musical et coloré de la talentueuse Marion Duclos. La Crabe fait peur, ses mains ressemblent plus à des pinces qu'à autre chose, à peine deux doigts comme des antennes collées sur des boursoufflures. Mais cela n'a pas toujours été le cas. Avec ses beaux yeux bleus et son physique avantageux, Younes, petit Algérien de dix ans, intègre une communauté de roumis, ces Français vivant en Algérie à la veille de l'insurrection. Younes, un petit Algérien de dix ans, vit avec ses parents et sa sœur. Après l'incendie criminel de leur récolte, ils sont ruinés et doivent quitter leurs terres pour trouver du travail en ville à Oran. Son père, ne pouvant subvenir à ses besoins, décide de confier son fils à son frère, pharmacien, marié à une Française. Younes devient Jonas et intègre une communauté de roumis c'est-à-dire des Français vivant en Algérie, les futurs « pieds-noirs ». Avec ses beaux yeux bleus et son physique avantageux, Younes est vite accepté par sa nouvelle communauté aisée. Au fil des années, il va découvrir son pays et apprendre à l'aimer, l'amitié entre quatre amis, de jeunes colons, et l'amour nommé Émilie. Mais il va aussi découvrir la misère des siens, la guerre et l’injustice. À travers le destin de Younès, Yasmina Khadra retrace l'histoire de l'insurrection algérienne et les raisons du déracinement des français d'Algérie.
