Iraq: A Tribute to Britain's Fallen Heroes tells the stories of the 176 UK personnel who have so far died serving with British Forces in Iraq, the most controversial conflict to have involved Her Majesty's Services for a century. Who are these brave men and women, how and why did they die, and in whose name? With no statue or memorial in place, this book is their only collective testimony. Every soldier, sailor and airman who has perished is recalled here by those they left behind and the colleagues who saw them die. The youngest were aged just 18 and barely old enough to be deployed, while the oldest fatality to date was a 55-year-old fireman. Author Mark Nicol weaves cherished memories fro...

Ultimate Risk

In November 2001, in the biggest and most destructive mission in SAS recent history, half of the world's most elite regiment took on Al Qaeda's crack forces in Afghanistan. This is the first-hand account of that battle, drawing on the memories of the men who fought in it. The target was a £50 million opium storage plant, which doubled as an Al Qaeda local command centre, in Helmand province. The mission had three objectives: to kill as many terrorists as possible; to collect enemy intelligence; and to destroy the opium, the main source of income for the Taliban regime. Ultimate Risk is a story of extraordinary courage. The mission involved a perilous advance to contact across open ground and yet there had been no time for CTRs (Close Target Reccies) and there were no maps. It culminated in a four-hour close quarter fight, leaving many enemy dead and yet, as the soldiers reveal, only a miracle prevented the biggest loss to life in SAS history.

Condor Blues

Condor Blues is an action-packed, dramatic, and true account of contemporary soldiering. It also shatters the conspiracy of silence over the direction of British operations in post-war Iraq. Gallantry medals may have been awarded on a scale unprecedented for half a century, but in winning the battles the British Army lost the peace. Author Mark Nicol focuses on the lives of two platoons based at the isolated Camp Condor in Iraq's Maysan Province. The soldiers' task was to live with and train Iraqi Civil Defense Corps recruits. Their lives jack-knifed from moments of force to farce, and they engaged in disturbing yet amusing pranks on a daily basis. They were also plunged into the biggest and...
