The Evidence for the Top Quark offers both a historical and philosophical perspective on an important recent discovery in particle physics: the first evidence for the elementary particle known as the top quark. Drawing on published reports, oral histories, and internal documents from the large collaboration that performed the experiment, Kent Staley explores in detail the controversies and politics that surrounded this major scientific result. At the same time the book seeks to defend an objective theory of scientific evidence based on error probabilities.
Quarks '90 covers various topics in the theory of elementary particles and quantum fields (including perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, sphalerons, topological field theory, strings and superstrings, physics in TeV region), astrophysics and cosmology as related to particle physics.
The 6th Advanced Course in Theoretical Physics was held at the University of Cape Town, January 8-19, 1990. The topic of the course was "Phase Structure of Strongly Interacting Matter". There were ten invited speakers from overseas, each having up to six hours in which to present his field of research to a relatively small audience of about 50 participants. This allowed for the presentation of a broad, coherent and pedagogical review of the present status of the field. In addition there were several one-hour presentations by local participants. The main emphasis of the course was on the study of the properties of high density hot nuclear matter. This field is of particular interest because o...
Half a century ago, the lives of people in the Columbia Basin changed forever when a series of dams altered their homes and landscapes. This book is the story of how people took their power back. By raising their voices, facing challenges and putting in years of hard work, the region's residents created Columbia Basin Trust. Since 1995, they have supported this exceptional resource as it, in turn, has supported them. Learn how Basin residents and the Trust have travelled this unprecedented path together, bringing life to dreams and helping the region flourish.
