Suuri ja mahtava kertoo Neuvostoliiton ja Venäjän historian lokakuun vallankumouksesta tähän päivään musiikkisatiirin keinoin. Alussa on toivo paremmasta tulevaisuudesta, jota toivotaan myös lopussa. Mikä on muuttunut siinä välissä – ihminenkö? Mikään ei ole niin pravdaa, etteikö sen takaa pilkottaisi toinenkin todellisuus. Henkilöitä ovat historian sankarit ja konnat, kuten Lenin, Trotski, Stalin, Gagarin, Gorbatshov, Jeltsin ja Putin. Sitovina elementteinä ovat Moskovaan haikailevat tshehovilaiset kolme sisarta. Näytelmän keskeisen tukirangan muodostaa musiikki, joka koostuu suomalaisille tutuista ja tunnistettavista ikivihreistä venäläis- ja neuvostosävelmistä.
