"Heirs of Flesh and Paper" tells the story of early modern dynastic politics through subjects’ practical responses to royal illness, failing princely reproduction, and heirs’ premature deaths. It treats connected dynastic crises between 1699 and 1716 as illustrative for early modern European political regimes in which the rulers’ corporeality defined politics. This political order grappled with the endemic uncertainties induced by dynastic bodies. By following the day-to-day practices of knowledge making in response to the unpredictability of royal health, the book shows how the ruling family’s mortal coils regularly threatened to destabilize the institutionalized legal fiction of kingship. Dynastic politics was not only as a transitory stage of state formation, part of elite cooperation, or a cultural construct. It needs to be approached through everyday practices that put ailing dynastic bodies front and center. In a period of intensifying political planning, it constituted one of the most important sites for changing the political itself.

Private face recognition technologies are increasingly entering the private and public sphere, with no adequate checks and balances. The volume explores the theme of ambiguity in medieval and early modern literature in essays honoring the life and work of Arthur Groos, Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Cornell University, USA, emeritus. The famous expression diz vliegende bîspel from Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival is its watchword. In the poem the black and white plumage of the magpie represents the characteristic complexity, ambiguity, and ambivalence of the romance. Removed from its historical context the expression is also a figure of Arthur Groos's wide-ranging intellectual flight. In addition to his work on medieval German verse narrative, he has made important contributions to courtly love poetry, medieval and early modern scientific literature, early modern German literature in general, and especially to opera.

Consent in European Data Protection Law
Today, consent is a fundamental concept in the European legal framework on data protection. The analysis of the historical and theoretical context carried out in this book reveals that consent was not an intrinsic notion in the birth of data protection. The concept of consent was included in data protection legislation in order to enhance the role of the data subject in the data protection arena, and to allow the data subject to have more control over the collection and processing of his/her personal information. This book examines the concept of consent and its requirements in the Data Protection Directive, taking into account contemporary considerations on bioethics and medical ethics, as well as recent developments in the framework of the review of the Directive.
