Set in the sixteenth century Village of Gruica's Bridge in Eastern Herzegovina, Wounded Dove in Honor and Disgrace explores an age long struggle for human understanding between the Muslim and Christian civilizations in the midst of political and social upheaval. Through the portrayal of a tradition in turmoil, it clearly points to grave sorrow the oppressed women of that time had to endure. It depicts their struggle for survival in the dominant male world and their reaction to overwhelming conditions, imposed upon them by the Ottoman Turks from the outside, and by the outlawed slave-traders from within. Angelina, the wounded dove in this story achieves some extraordinary things. Restrictions inherent in the traditional codes of behavior of her own people do not make her life any easier. Numerous adversities force Angelina to take charge of her life and to undertake drastic measures in order to ensure her husband's release from the Turkish Bey's dungeons and to save her family's honor.

Serbian Oral Poetry 14th - 20th Century: Paradigms of Honor

The aim of this study is twofold. First, it demonstrates how, in each example, an oral poet juxtaposes the three systems of honor: patriotic, patriarchal, and religious; how he places them in conflict, and finally, how he seeks the ways to reconcile them. Second, it shows that the concepts of honor, tensions between them, and modes of resolution, expressed throughout the oral tradition remain a constant in the written epic creations of the twentieth century. The epic poet's role is not to record the past as a verifiable fact. His role is to interpret past events or actions according to the values inherent in the tradition and culture of his people. His further role is to commemorate the lives of ancestors in the idealizing ways, typical of oral epic, as he celebrates their deeds and laments their misdeeds, promoting national unity, endurance, stoicism, and heroic resistance.

Originally published in 1916, Serbia in Light and Darkness is Velimirovic's retelling of the history of his people. He wishes to share with the Western world the story of his people at their best and the story of his people at their worst-a history that many are completely unfamiliar with. Velimirovic speaks on the character of the Serbian soul and how the suffering endured by his countrymen has forged them into a unique people with an abiding faith. Offering a deep understanding of culture and national pride, this small book will be of interest to religious scholars, historians, and anyone with a passion for understanding international relations. Serbian bishop NIKOLAJ VELIMIROVIC (1880-1956) was a member of the Orthodox church and prominent, though controversial theological writer: though canonized by the Orthodox church, some of his writings are considered anti-Semitic. Among his most prominent writings are The Religious Spirit of the Slavs (1916) and Beyond Sin and Death (1914).

The Lost Border

Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar....Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe. From the Baltic, south, those barriers cut across Germany in a gash of barbed wire, concrete, dog runs, and guard towers. Farther south, there may be no visible, no obvious wall. But there remain armed guards and checkpoints all the same -- still a restriction on the right to travel, still an instrument to impose upon ordinary men and women the will of a totalitarian state. Ronald Reagan delivered these words as part of his famous "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" speech of June 1987. Tw...
