A Bishopric Between Three Kingdoms
In 1045, the northern Iberian Bishopric of Calahorra was brought back into being by García III of Navarre on the frontline of his expanding frontiers with Castile. On the death of its eighth post-restoration bishop in 1190, all or part of the territory of this, by then unmistakably Castilian, see had changed hands no less than seven times between Navarre, Aragon, and Leon-Castile/Castile, as these emergent Christian kingdoms competed furiously over the Riojan frontier zone that it occupied. This book, the first to provide a detailed exploration of eleventh and twelfth century Calahorra, examines the relationship between the extreme volatility of Calahorra’s political situation and the peculiarities of the see’s political and institutional development during its first 145 years as a restored Iberian bishopric.

Die Iberische Halbinsel im Mittelalter war durch eine interreligiöse sowie zahlreiche binnen-christliche Grenzziehungen gekennzeichnet. Erstmals vergleicht die vorliegende Studie systematisch die Grenzen des Königreiches Kastilien zu seinen Anrainern Aragón, Navarra, León, Portugal und dem Naṣridenemirat. In raumsoziologischer Perspektive werden die Konstruktionsmechanismen von Herrschaftsgrenzen anhand der kastilischen Vertragsdiplomatie erörtert (ca. 1140 bis 1400). Vertragliche Argumentationen sowie historische und naturräumliche Bezüge zeigen, dass der Faktor der Interreligiosität hinter diplomatische Rahmenbedingen zurücktreten konnte. Die exemplarische Untersuchung lokaler Abgrenzungen, der Regulierung von Konflikten und des Handels an jeweils zwei kastilischen Grenzabschnitten zeigt das Wirkgefüge monarchischer, überregionaler und lokaler Akteure im Grenzregime. Die Arbeit eröffnet ein nuancierteres Verständnis der räumlichen Dimension von Herrschaft und demonstriert, wie einheitlich-religiöse und gemischt-religiöse Abgrenzungsprozesse vergleichend untersucht werden können.

Das Mittelalter wird in der Forschung als eine von grundlegenden Wandlungs- und Integrationsprozessen gekennzeichnete Epoche betrachtet. Dabei fungierte das Papsttum seit der "papstgeschichtlichen Wende" als zentraler Motor für Integrationsprozesse. Die Abhandlung arbeitet als Fallstudie solche Prozesse an der geographischen Peripherie des heutigen Europas heraus. Analysiert werden die wechselhaften Beziehungen der Päpste zum Erzbistum Toledo, dem im Selbstverständnis der dortigen Prälaten kirchlichen Zentrum der Iberischen Halbinsel unmittelbar an der umkämpften Grenze zum muslimisch beherrschten Süden. In den Blick genommen werden ausgewählte Konflikte, die im Zeitraum von rund hundert Jahren seit der Eroberung der Stadt durch christliche Truppen 1085 unter päpstlicher Beteiligung ausgetragen wurden.
