All indications are that the current mountain pine beetle outbreak will have a significant impact on a large proportion of the pine forests in British Columbia (Eng et al. 2004). It is neither desirable nor possible to harvest all of the affected pine forests. Nonetheless, any increases beyond current harvest levels must carefully consider all forest values. This document provides recommendations to the Chief Forester about the conservation of all forest values during large-scale salvage operations: 1. At the landscape level, there should be little, to no, salvage harvesting in the noncontributing land base and, at the very least, what was originally planned under existing landscape-level pl...
In this study, L.E. Semler begins with a comprehensive, historical definition of Mannerism in visual arts from which he derives four key terms that constitute the nucleus of the aesthetic: technical precision, elegance, grazia, and the difficulta:facilita formula. These principles - interwoven with one another and with maniera - are derived from visual arts but are specifically designed to be transferable to any medium. The rest of the book situates the English poets in relation to the visual arts - including painting, limning, gold- and silversmithery, architecture, and garden design - and discusses their verse in relation to the key Mannerist principles.

Part of the British Columbia commitment to conserve biodiversity involves setting aside areas for retention of old seral stage forest. Such areas are to be representative of the landscape unit in which forest planning is done. A recent policy clarification indicated that the level of representation of these areas was not to be at a scale finer than the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification (BEC) variant. This study reports results of a pilot-scale assessment of the risk to biodiversity of representation at the BEC variant level versus representation at the site series level. Study methods are described and the resulting data are summarized for 11 landscape units examined. Information is included on area & percentage of area forested, by BEC variant; area of old forest in the timber harvesting land base & non-contributing land base, in edge & interior condition by site series; areas in old & young forest condition; area of old forest removed; calculated area of old growth management area required under variant- & site-series-level policies; and age class structure of the forest.
A thorough and fascinating exploration of the evolution of English' phonological structure, this book traces the history of individual sounds and their representation through Old, Middle, Early Modern and Present Day English.Written in an engaging and accessible style, the book covers the sounds of English, consonantal histories, Middle English dialects, vowel quality and quantity in Early Modern English, the English stress system and Early English verse forms to demonstrate how the present form of the language is indebted to its past.Key Features: Places linguistic findings into historical, literary and social contextsExplains Modern English's phonological features in terms of its developmentAdditional exercises, references and suggestions for further reading will be available on the book's webpage

This report examines protected areas on Vancouver Island from the point of view of conservation goals as opposed to recreation or cultural goals. It focusses on an assessment of gaps in representation of ecosystems by protected areas. The assessment methodology involved examination of maps depicting the range of ecosystem diversity, the human modification of that diversity, and the existing protected areas system; determining objectives for the amount of protected areas required; and determining the additional area needed to fill the protected area gap for each biogeoclimatic subzone/variant in each ecosection. Several features of a strategy to fill those gaps are also outlined.
