En concordancia con el enfoque didáctico de la asignatura, se ha buscado evitar un enfoque fragmentado de las matemáticas mediante el planteamiento de actividades y problemas que involucren varios conceptos interrelacionados. Esto es, se sigue un enfoque holístico en el que se propicia el manejo de dos o más ideas y las relaciones entre ellas. Se proponen actividades con diferentes niveles de dificultad y de abstracción de modo que haya problemas interesantes para la diversidad de estudiantes, siempre teniendo como referencia los aprendizajes esperados y los niveles que pueden ser alcanzados por los estudiantes de primer grado. Eventualmente se presentan situaciones familiares o concretas cuando el tema lo permite, en otros casos se formulan tareas más abstractas pero cuidando que estén al alcance de los estudiantes. Se pretende promover que el estudiante se comprometa con las actividades para que desarrolle su razonamiento, su habilidad para resolver problemas y su capacidad de aplicar sus conocimientos en situaciones matemáticas y extra matemáticas.
