Biotechnology and the Politics of Plants explores the mysterious phenomenon of ‘apomixis’, the ability of certain plants to ‘self-clone’, and its potential as a revolutionary tool for agriculture and enhancing food security, that may soon be a reality. Through historical anthropological and ethnographic study, Matt Hodges traces the development of the CIMMYT Apomixis Project, a prominent frontier research initiative, and its reinvention as a leading public-private partnership. He analyzes the fast-moving historical transition from public sector, mixed plant breeding approaches grounded in genetics, to a contemporary era of agricultural biotechnology and genomics where PPPs are a lead...

No one has had a greater effect on the world than Jesus of Nazareth. But how does a simple carpenter from first-century Palestine end up shaping the course of history more than anyone who has ever lived? By accomplishing what no other person has ever done: by rising from the dead. Lots of people have passed on helpful teachings, and many have died for their cause, but no one has changed the world like Jesus has, because no one has done what Jesus did. In his resurrection, Jesus proved that he was far more than just another religious revolutionary: he was God incarnate. Unfortunately, many people discount this aspect of Jesus' identity, claiming that a resurrection from the dead isn't possible. This book shows that not only is Jesus' resurrection philosophically possible, but that a careful and honest assessment of the historical data confirms its historicity. More importantly, though, it explores how Jesus' victory over death gives us hope--a living hope--and secures for us an unimaginably joyful future.

Once Upon An Alpha

I was walking through an unknown foggy forest when I spotted a field of wildflowers. My feet had a mind of their own as they led me to wander through the flowers. I nonchalantly dragged my hands over the flowers. It was a beautiful and serene sight. I deeply inhaled the sweet scent of the flower and gave a little shudder of bliss. I closed my eyes and just absorbed the moment wanting to remember it. Suddenly the sounds of paws hitting the forest floor overwhelmed me. Then the forest was ignited with flames. Everything glowed vibrant oranges and reds as heavy smoke smothered me from above. I threw myself to the ground desperate for any trace of clean air. As I attempted to crawl out of the flowers a new sound harmonized with the thunder paws, screams and howls for help terrorized me. I clawed at the ground desperate to escape the menacing choir. Fire licked my skin and I screamed for help. Sobs escaped my lips as flaming branches fell on me from above. The smell of burning flesh was the only thing that consumed me as everything went dark.

However, with a small inheritance coming, Matt promised Lydia he'd not only pay for the cosmetic surgery she so craves, but that he'd also get them out of debt. Unfortunately for Lydia, as soon as the check is cashed, Matt heads for Reno to try his hand at high-stakes poker, and to stay as drunk as possible for as long as possible. Meanwhile, back home in Modesto, Lydia plots with a local violent criminal (who happens to be her new lover) to find Matt and get the cash for themselves before it's all gone. What happens when they all finally meet in Reno will be our little secret, okay?

The Growth and Spreading of Heresy

From 2 Peter 2:2, “And many shall follow their pernicious ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of,” Hodges skillfully and biblically explains the growth of heresy and its nature in relation to the church. He shows how all professing Christians ought to hold steadfastly to the truth, no matter what “new light” is introduced to them, and instead, desire the old paths of God’s infallible word. Heresies are destructive, which infect the unsuspecting mind. The church ought to be staunchly guarding against them. Many heretical opinions have risen up by the subtle working of the devil to infect the church throughout the ages, but God’s Fatherly providence has ra...

Urban Hunters

An ethnography of the Mongolian capital city of Ulaanbaatar during the nation's transition from socialism to a market-based economic system Urban Hunters is an ethnography of the Mongolian capital city, Ulaanbaatar, during the nation's transition from socialism to a market-based economic system. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991, Mongolia entered a period of economic chaos characterized by wild inflation, disappearing banks, and closing farms, factories, and schools. During this time of widespread poverty, a generation of young adults came of age. In exploring the social, cultural, and existential ramifications of a transition that has become permanent and acquired a logic of its own, Lars Højer and Morten Axel Pedersen present a new theorization of social agency in postsocialist as well as postcolonial contexts.
