Son savoir-vivre est-il au goût du jour ? Il fréquente de jolies femmes, croise à l’occasion le regard amoureux d’un homme, sans jamais donner suite. Il a tenté d’être acteur pour se sentir libre; une expérience malheureuse. Il se résout à devenir spectateur de la société. Dans ce premier roman paru en 1981, Matthias Zschokke s’empare de toute sorte de vanités humaines, les égratigne avec élégance, humour et une inventivité narrative qui n’appartient qu’à lui. Matthias Zschokke est né en 1954 à Berne et vit à Berlin depuis 1980. Écrivain, dramaturge, cinéaste, il a reçu le prix Robert Walser pour son premier roman, Max, en 1981, et le prix Femina étranger pour Maurice à la poule en 2009.
