Vergleichbar entwickeln sich in diesem Zeitraum, der die Lebensspanne von Eduard Sueß abdeckt, die Erdwissenschaften: beginnend mit den ersten flächendeckenden staatlichen Landesaufnahmen, der Etablierung erdwissenschaftlicher Lehrkanzeln an den Universitäten über das Hofmineralienkabinett, das in dieser Periode eine zuvor nie gekannte Blütezeit erlebt, bis zum Aufkommen »mobiler Theorien« wie der Deckenlehre und der Kontinentaldrift.
