The Artist as Curator
This massive publication, initiated by the ZERO foundation in Düsseldorf, presents the result of several years of collaboration by an international group of scholars composed of art historians from Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The texts are based on extensive research in various archives in Europe and the United States that has brought to light unpublished material. They reflect the cooperation of the ZERO foundation with other institutions, foundations and private archives. Formed at the beginning of the 1960s, the ZERO group was an international network of like-minded artists from Europe, Japan and North and South America that included among its ranks such artists as Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, Piero Manzoni, Almir Mavignier, Jan Schoonhoven and Jesús Rafael Soto.

Gutai
Gutai is the first book in English to examine Japan’s best-known modern art movement, a circle of postwar artists whose avant-garde paintings, performances, and installations foreshadowed many key developments in American and European experimental art. Working with previously unpublished photographs and archival resources, Ming Tiampo considers Gutai’s pioneering transnational practice, spurred on by mid-century developments in mass media and travel that made the movement’s field of reception and influence global in scope. Using these lines of transmission to claim a place for Gutai among modernist art practices while tracing the impact of Japan on art in Europe and America, Tiampo demonstrates the fundamental transnationality of modernism. Ultimately, Tiampo offers a new conceptual model for writing a global history of art, making Gutai an important and original contribution to modern art history.

To mention only a few; James Turell's admirable explorations of light and infinite space; Tatsuo Miyajima's fascination with space and time, which expresses humankind's need to link it's existence to the vast expanse of the universe; Anish Kapoor's investigations into metaphysical polarities like presence and absence, being and non-being, darkness and light. Their work as well as the ones presented in Artempo, are a re-examination of the relationship between nature and the man-made world, a re-evaluation of our perceptions of reality of how we read the information, meaning, and poetry in the physical world around us.

ZERO 4, eine neue Ausgabe des von Heinz Mack und Otto Piene 1958 gegründeten und 1961 zuletzt erschienenen ZERO-Magazins, greift die einst geführte Auseinandersetzung um neue künstlerische Konzepte erneut auf. Mit ZERO sollte Ende der fünfziger Jahre ein "Nullpunkt" gesetzt werden, von dem aus eine neue Avantgarde sich entwickeln konnte. Ausgehend von dem der ZERO-Gruppe zugrunde liegenden künstlerischen Vorstellungen untersuchte die ZERO Foundation Düsseldorf im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojekts die Frage nach der Rezeption und Aktualität der in den ZERO-Magazinen formulierten Ansätze. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung werden in ZERO 4 vorgestellt.
