Assessment, management and future directions for coastal fisheries in Asian countries
In Asia, the fisheries sector is important in terms of food security, livelihoods and foreign exchange earnings. However, as in many parts of the world, there are signs that capture fisheries are fully exploited or overfished. Management of fisheries in the region is often hampered by lack of information on the status of fisheries in terms of biological, social, economic, policy and governance aspects. This regional project documents an alarming decline on coastal fishery resources, based on historic research surveys in South and Southeast Asia. Socio-economic analyses and policy reviews highlight the importance of the fisheries sector but also the challenges facing it. Potential interventions to improve fisheries management in the countries are outlined and defined with environmental, socioeconomic and institutional objectives.
Deficit Irrigation for Wheat Cultivation Under Limited Water Supply Condition
Vertical and horizontal expansion of irrigated agriculture to feed the increasing population has contributed to excessive groundwater withdrawal and affected the availability of water in terms of both quality and quantity. To sustain agricultural growth, strategic measures should be adopted to reduce water consumption while minimizing adverse effect on yield. The effect of deficit irrigation on wheat yield was studied in three consecutive years (2002-03 to 2004-05) in field and pot. This is a first-hand account of the last days of the founder of Pakistan, the Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah written by Lt.-Col. Ilahi Bakhsh, a doctor of medicine, who was attending to Mohammad Ali Jinnah during his last illness. The narrative includes the author's conversations with M.A. Jinnah, together with an account of the author's diagnosis and treatment.

"Whether we believe or not but one thing is quite true that there are hardly a few individual personalities in the world history who are remembered even today with passing of the years and Md. Ali Jinnah is one of them. While Pakistanis generally see him as the Quaid-i-Azam, the Great leader or father of their nation, Indians often regard him as a villain who led down his people into the unforgivable sin against their nationalist faith. His figure is similarly raised among distinguished foreign scholars, who are impartial by national commitment. Sir Penderal Moon has written: "There is, I believe, no historical parallel for a single individual affecting such a political revolution; and his achievement is a striking refutation of the theory that in the making of history the individual is of little or no significance.
