Describing in November 2010 the influence of Mel Nichols on motoring writing, Jeremy Clarkson said: ‘I still think his story about driving three Lamborghinis from Italy is the best-ever drive story... I’m trying to do stuff like that now, only on television.’ This book is a collection of Nichols’ best writings, mostly covering supercars of the 1970s and 1980s, and mostly published in Car magazine at the time when, under Nichols’ leadership, it was regarded by the industry and enthusiasts as the best motoring magazine in the world. All car fans will enjoy the 50 stories in this book for their panache and nostalgia.

Philosophers and theorists have long recognized both the subversive and the transformative possibilities of friendship, the intimacy of which can transcend the impersonality of such identity categories as race, class, or gender. Unlike familial relations, friendships are chosen, opening a space of relative freedom in which to create and explore new identities. This process has been particularly valuable to poets marginalized by gender or sexuality since the second half of the twentieth century, as friendship provides both a buffer against and a wedge into predominantly male homosocial poetic communities. Among Friends presents a richly theorized evocation of friendship as a fluid, critical s...

"Ghosts appear in place of whatever a given people will not face" (p. 65) The poems in Gravesend explore ghosts as instances of collective grief and guilt, as cultural constructs evolved to elide or to absorb a given society’s actions, as well as, at times, to fill the gaps between such actions and the desires and intentions of its individual citizens. Tracing the changing nature of the ghostly in the western world from antiquity to today, the collection focuses particularly on the ghosts created by the European expansion of the 16th through 20th centuries, using the town of Gravesend, the seaport at the mouth of the Thames through which countless emigrants passed, as an emblem of theambiguous threshold between one life and another, in all the many meanings of that phrase.

The Redondo Beach Police Department dates to May 9, 1892, when Marshall S. Rogers was appointed as the citys first marshal. One of the first city ordinances prohibited the discharge of firearms within city limits and provided the option for hiring of a deputy if needed. He was needed, of course, as the city would grow into a major West Coast resort by the 1920s. The department adapted through the changes brought on by the Depression, World War II, and the postwar boom, serving and protecting citizens and fighting crime both unique to beach-city life as well as changing times while enforcing all laws for residents and tourists alike across the dawns of two centuries. In the 21st century, more than 250 sworn officers, support personnel, and volunteers serve one of Southern Californias most respected and innovative departments.
