The first comprehensive biographical, critical, and bibliographical source on lesbian writers, this reference book features essays on 100 contemporary writers of poetry, fiction, and drama in the United States. Each essay comprises a biography, with personal history often derived from interviews, an analysis of major works and themes, an overview of the critical reception, and bibliographies of primary works and of critical studies and reviews. Selected Poems

Selected Poems gathers writing from four decades of Nancy Cunard's life, some published here for the first time. The selection illuminates Cunard's transnational modernist project in full, from her early years as a coterie poet on the edges of Bloomsbury and avant-garde London, to her frontline activism during the Spanish Civil War and life-long fight against fascism in Europe and America, to her final years documented in poems written from hospitals and sanatoriums. Among the poems is Cunard's longer, psychogeographical work Parallax, published originally by the Hogarth Press, a response in part to T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Through her introduction and notes, editor Sandeep Parmar frames Cunard's complex legacy as a poet, publisher, and activist. A contribution to the wider feminist revision of modernism, this volume draws attention to Cunard's extraordinary, prismatic oeuvre, shaped by some of the twentieth century's most dramatic events. 'One of the major phenomena of history.' William Carlos Williams. 'A bold heroine of the battle against the inexpressible' Ramón J. Sender

Wild Geese Returning

Wild Geese Returning

The genre of poems that may be read both forward and backward, producing different creations was known as the "flight of wild geese." These poems were often sent so that a distant lover, like the migrating birds, would return. Its greatest practitioner, and the focus of this critical anthology, is Su Hui, a woman who, in the 4th Century, embroidered a silk for her distant husband using a grid of 840 characters that created perhaps 12,000 ways to read this poem. With examples from the 3rd to the 19th centuries, Michele Metail describes reversible poems as "a singular adventure at the edge of meaning, of language, and of writing."
