Die Studie befaßt sich mit der Geschichte der Übersetzung slowenischer Literatur ins Deutsche. Deren Entwicklungslinien zeichnet sie exemplarisch anhand der Übersetzung von Volksdichtung (als Beginn einer nennenswerten übersetzerischen Tätigkeit in der vorromantischen Epoche) sowie dreier als klassisch geltender slowenischer Autoren (PreSeren, Cankar, Kosovel) nach. Die beobachtbare Tatsache, daß slowenische Literatur im deutschsprachigen Raum bis in die sechziger Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts vergleichsweise schwach rezipiert wurde, veranlaßt den Autor zu einer Untersuchung der geistesgeschichtlichen Umfelder, in denen es über zweihundert Jahre kaum zu einer auf Nachhaltigkeit abgestellten Vermittlung slowenischer Literatur in den deutschsprachigen Raum kam. Die Analyse der von Herausgebern und Kommentatoren gepflogenen Darstellungsweisen fördert charakteristische Einstellungen zutage, die eine ideologisch unbelastete Auseinandersetzung mit der slowenischen Literatur lange Zeit verhinderten.
When one looks at the history of English Studies there has been a noticeable proliferation of research interests since the 1970s. As a result of such development, attempts have been made to create a new basis for communication and cooperation inside Anglistics and across disciplines. Making a case for a Dialogic Anglistics is such an attempt. A Dialogic Anglistics is based on a normative concept of dialogue aiming for egalitarian forms of cooperation both inside, between and across disciplines leading to the redefinition of old and creation of manifold new directions for English Studies. In the nineteen articles presented in this volume dialogic encounters are encouraged both within and between different fields within Anglistics. Furthermore, dialogic links are created with colleagues from other academic disciplines.

Relying on the structure and methodology of classical and postclassical narratology, this book explores the phenomena of story and narrative, narrator, focalization, character, time and space, as well as the beginning and the ending of a narrative. This book investigates linguistic variation as a complex continuum of language use from standard to nonstandard. In our view, these notions can only be established through mutual definition, and they cannot exist without the opposite pole. What is considered standard English changes according to the approach at hand, and the nonstandard changes accordingly. This book offers an interdisciplinary and multifaceted approach to this central theme of wide interest. The articles approach writing in nonstandard language through various disciplines and methodologies: sociolinguistics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, dialectology, corpus linguistics, and ideological and political points of view. The theories and methods from these fields are applied to material that ranges from nonliterary writing to canonized authors. Dialects, regional varieties and worldwide Englishes are also addressed.
This selection of 30 contributions (3 workshop reports, 27 papers from 14 countries) concentrates on intercultural communication in its broadest sense: themes vary from dissident translation under the Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines and translation as a process of power in the 3rd world context to drama translation and the role of the cognitive sciences in translation theory. Topics of current interest such as media interpreting, news translation, advertising, subtitling and the ethics of translation have a prominent position, as does the Workshop 'Contact as Conflict' which discusses the phenomenon of the hybrid text as a result of the translation process. The volume closes with the EST Focus debate on thorny issues of Methodology, Policy and Training.
