Body Utopianism
This book investigates how desires to transform our bodies can bring utopia to the present, and how utopian practices often lead to distinctly dystopian or anti-utopian outcomes. It is the first comprehensive study to address the paradoxical relationship between bodies and utopianism. Franziska Bork Petersen discusses doping, bodybuilding and cosmetic surgery alongside practices such as retouching the ‘body as image’ on social media, and looks at how fashion modelling and performance ‘estrange’ the body. Techniques and technologies to transform our bodies are increasingly accessible and suggest an excessive identification of the body as lacking. To ‘be a body’ in a culturally meaningful way, we incessantly improve our bodily appearance and capacity. The book therefore addresses the utopianism inherent in a cultural understanding of bodies as increasingly controllable.
Landscapes of Affect and Emotion
The volume Landscapes of Affect and Emotion maps out the current approaches on emotion and affect in environmental humanities and interdisciplinary landscape studies. It discusses the contemporary emotional turn in humanities and its relation to space, place and landscape. Emotions and affects are addressed from three main angles: representation and symbolic landscape, place experience and lifeworlds, and landscape as an embodied set of practices. These are studied in terms of the changing human-nature relationship, focusing on politicisations and contestations of landscape as well as boundaries and hybridity between culture and nature.
Social Development in the World Bank
This open access book honors the work of Michael Cernea, who was the World Bank’s first professional sociologist, by taking on and extending his arguments for "putting people first.” Cernea led a community of social scientists in formulating and promoting a comprehensive set of innovative and original social policies on development issues, which the World Bank adopted and implemented. This book includes globally significant work on urban and rural development, the epistemology of using social science knowledge in national and international development, methodologies for using social organization for more effective poverty reduction, and the experience of crafting social policies to become normative frameworks for purposive collective social action. And by including contributions from senior policy makers in the World Bank who helped shepherd social science's entry into development policy and practice, it provides a unique look at how organizational change can happen.

This fifth installation from the world-renowned Goetz Collection showcases eight artists born between 1949 and 1976, including James Casebere, Barnaby Hosking, Zilla Leutenegger, Magnus Plessen, Wilhelm Sasnal, Dana Schutz, Laurie Simmons and Matthias Weischer. Casebere and Simmons are likely the best known to most readers; the third featured American artist, Dana Schutz, born in 1976, creates politically tinged fairytale figures and narratives in paint, like "the last man in the world." Among her European compatriots are Hosking, born in 1976, who makes video installations on how works of art are created, from paintings to bowls for Japanese tea ceremonies. Wilhelm Sasnal, born in 1972, began by studying architecture; his films use press photos, collages, videos, comics, old-master paintings and simple snapshots. This series' topic is broadly defined as contemporary painting, and its hallmark--as the genre's--may be that its canvases vary widely from the traditional cloth.
