PC Based Instrumentation and Control is a guide to implementing computer control, instrumentation and data acquisition using a standard PC and some of the more traditional computer languages. Numerous examples of configurations and working circuits, as well as representative software, make this a practical, hands-on guide to implementing PC-based testing and calibration systems and increasing efficiency without compromising quality or reliability. Guidance is given on modifying the circuits and software routines to meet the reader's specific needs. The third edition includes updated coverage of PC hardware and bus systems, a new chapter on virtual instruments and an introduction to programming and software development in a modern 32-bit environment. Additional examples have been included, with source code and executables available for download from the companion website www.key2control.com.

Abortion and Infanticide

This book has two main concerns. The first is to isolate the fundamental issues that must be resolved if one is able to formulate a defensible position on the question of the morality of abortion. The second is to determine the most plausible stand on those issues. The issues are intellectually difficult and many of them have been more or less ignored in public debate on abortion. Tooley argues, however, that plausible answers can be advanced, and that they support a liberal position on the morality of abortion.

[A] collection of essays by authorities on Gertrude Jekyll's life and times and by experts on gardens and garden history from both sides of the Atlantic. The book describes 300 years of Jekyll family history, including the family's emigration to America in the eighteenth century. The book's subtitle "Essays on the life of a working amateur" echoes Gertrude Jekyll's description of herself in her first book, Wood and Garden, published in 1899. Included are contributions by three members of the Jekyll family, two great great nieces, Primrose Arnander and Annabel Freyberg, and a great nephew, David McKenna, the last surviving member of the family to have known her well, who has written the foreword and postscript. Much of this information is hitherto unpublished and is made available through the co-operation of the Jekyll Estate, as well as personal and family memories of Gertrude Jekyll, her sister and brothers. -- Cover.

Originally published in 1985, this volume of essays was compiled in honour of Gordon Manley, a major and distinctive twentieth-century figure in climatology. The range and scope of the topics covered reflect the eclectic interests of Manley, whose orientation was always towards the importance of climate and its impact on mankind. The state of the art of climatic change is considered at different scales by the contributors: from instrumental records on a local scale from Durham and Manchester to discussions on the regional and continental scale. Methodological problems relating to climatic change are treated. The effects of climate and climatic change on plant distribution, disease vectors and agricultural pests are also considered.

Causation

Causation

Traditional empiricist accounts of causation and of laws of nature have been reductionist, in the sense of entailing that, given a complete specification of the non-causal properties of, and relations among, particulars, it is thereby logically determined both what laws there are, and whatevents are causally related. It is argued here, however, that reductionist accounts of causation, and of laws of nature, are exposed to decisive objections, and thus that the time has come for empiricists to break with that tradition. The basic goal of this book, therefore, is to set out, and to defend, realist accounts of these concepts. In the case of causal relations, for example, Tooley maintains that causation is basically a matter of theoretical relations which underlie and explain relative frequencies. He argues thatsuch an approach avoids the objections that tell against reductionist accounts, and that it does so without making casual relations epistemologically inaccessible.
