Die Goldene Aue in Geschichte und Gegenwart
Die Etappen der geologischen Herausbildung der Goldenen Aue, die Besiedlung, die Urbarmachung und die geschichtliche Entwicklung wurden unter besonderer Berücksichtigung ausgewählter Orte der Goldenen Aue dargestellt. Anhand von Beispielen werden das Leben der Bauern und die Entwicklung der Landwirtschaft sowie deren Mechanisierung behandelt. Ein besonderes Kapitel ist den Mühlen in der Goldenen Aue und in Nordhausen gewidmet. Die Entwicklung der Wechselbeziehungen zwischen der Stadt Nordhausen und der Goldenen Aue wurden herausgearbeitet. Die Ausführungen konzentrieren sich auf das Gebiet der Goldenen Aue im Landkreis Nordhausen. Aus den historischen Erfahrungen ergeben sich auch Schlussfolgerungen für die zukünftige Entwicklung. Die Goldene Aue und die Stadt Nordhausen waren immer dann erfolgreich, wenn man die Wechselbeziehungen effektiv nutzte, die Schätze der Region als solche begriff und wirtschaftlich sowie touristisch zur Wirkung gebracht hat.
Techniques of Illusion
This book explores stage conjuring during its “golden age,” from about 1860 to 1910. This study provides close readings highlighting four paradigmatic illusions of the time that stand in for different kinds of illusions typical of stage magic in the “golden age” and analyses them within their cultural and media-historical context: “Pepper’s Ghost,” the archetypical mirror illusion; “The Vanishing Lady,” staging a teleportation in a time of a dizzying acceleration of transport; “the levitation,” simulating weightlessness with the help of an extended steel machinery; and “The Second Sight,” a mind-reading illusion using up-to-date communication technologies. These close readings are completed by writings focusing on visual media and expanding the scope backwards and forwards in time, roughly to 1800 and to 2000. This exploration will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and performance studies.

Jan-Hendrik Passoth rekonstruiert die Entwicklung sozialwissenschaftlicher Techniktheorien von der frühen Moderne bis zur Gegenwart. Ziel ist es, eine Verfestigung von zwei Erklärungsmustern zu untersuchen, die sich während der Entwicklung gebildet hat. Diese Erklärungsmuster unterscheiden sich im Kern darin, dass sie entweder der Technik oder der Gesellschaft ein besonderes Gewicht einräumen. Die Varianten der Erklärungsmuster ändern sich mit den Veränderungen der modernen Technik und Gesellschaft. Der Umgang mit den Herausforderungen der Moderne hat auch zu einer Dichotomie in Bezug auf Begriffe und Grundannahmen geführt. In Auseinandersetzung mit drei zeitgenössischen Alternativen formuliert der Autor zudem Grundfragen einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Techniktheorie, die die Trennung von Technizismus und Kulturalismus zu vermeiden versucht.
